Thanks Tom. Any idea why the 60's vacuum reservoir is so much smaller than the 40's?

Cos the forty is the better vehicle (with Toyota paying less attention to "making economies" than they did with the later series) :D

Got a working glow switch on the dash, removed the choke knob, reamed out the hole to fit the switch I bought (tractor glow switch) Used the fasten seat belt lens and the glow light from the donor cluster for an indicator light.

I might try to make a decal for the front of the lens that says GLOW with the glow symbol above it.

Trouble shooting my oil pressure gage, the sending unit is working and the gage deflects when the wire is grounded, but the gage still doesn’t work. The only other test in the manual is to check the resistance between two points on the back of the gage-cluster as I have a BJ60 manual and not a 40, not sure what points to check….any chance the BJ60 sending unit is not compatible with the FJ4* gage?

Also had to order some extended soft lines for the brakes from $OR (how is it that shipping four pre-cups from AUS to Idaho is cheaper than shipping two brake lines from southern California to Idaho?) Got the vacuum tank mounted and half plumbed.

Hope to get the brakes functioning and move it soon...

The ebrake system looks robust.

I jacked up each end of the frame to check the length of soft line I needed to order for the brakes...

Speaking of e-brakes, both assemblies I have are too short, the one attached to the rear axle (FJ6*) is too short by a couple feet, the one in the boxes of parts (which I assume was the original one) is too short by less than a foot...

Does anyone make custom length e-brake cables?

My guess, the engineers figured the 40 needed more reserve capacity for its typical use off road. It doesn't take that many pumps of the brakes in a BJ60 to get the brake warning light or lose vacuum assist on the trail.

Got the brake lines yesterday, managed to get them mounted up and bled today. Got the fuel gauge working, temp, oil (sort of) speedometer is working (and odometer), just have to get the ammeter sorted and most of the electrical will be done. Still no stop/turn or tail lights.

Took it for a trip around the block. Got it up to about 40 mph, gearing is a bit tall only got to 3rd. I'd have to get it on the interstate to shift into 4th or 5th.

The 'rebuilt' radiator I got has some issues, there's a pin-hole leak where the tank and core meet, and some of the fins are leaking, so I'll need to pull it and re-core

No front shocks (or mounts) yet. Plenty to do, but it's moves under it's own power!

Latest punch list:
  • Ammeter (need to route the wire going to the battery from the alternator through the dash meter)
  • Find where the flasher mounts and install it (flasher was in a box of parts) Flasher's work, once all the lights were hooked up.
  • Fab a mount for the 60-tachometer and wire it up, probably hang below the dash, next to the hand throttle.
  • Still looking for a filter light and need to get a vacuum buzzer, maybe I can integrate these into the tachometer mount
  • Radiator repair (was told the radiator had been repaired and pressure tested when I bought it, has a few leaks though)
  • Muffler & exhaust (wife/kids/dogs & neighbors are getting tired of the open header sound) Not real happy with it, but it's done for now.
  • front shock hoops and shocks
  • Windshield wipers, switch
  • Seat belts
  • Rear seat
  • Fabricate a mount for the tail lights and install (I like the Metaltech rear bumper) 1/4" wall tubing seems a bit over-kill though, probably a heavy mother...
  • Probably pull the brake master/booster out and replace with the 60-series unit which looks to be in better shape and has a proportioning valve.
  • Change out the 3.7 gears for 4.1's Don't think this will be necessary, RPMS are good as is (probably snowball into complete axle and brake rebuild on both ends)...DEBATING swapping the e-locked FF rear end out of my 45 LPB and installing under this...

This had me worried because I thought a 1982 FJ45 would have had a -50/+50 "sample-current" ammeter in its combination meter (that operates off the voltage drop across the main fusible link). But I see from your photos that you appear to have an earlier comination meter with -30/+30 "full-current" ammeter.

Yeah, it's a bit of a bastardized set-up. I am 'the P.O.' you hear people refer to all the time...

Thanks, Ken.

Pulled the radiator out tonight. The guy that owns the local radiator repair shop lives about 3-blocks from my house and let me drop it off there. Said he'd take it to work tomorrow, and should be able to get it fixed tomorrow.

Found out why it was leaking out of the drain...the bung is split; over torqued at some point.

Got the radiator back and installed, took it for a spin, got it up to temp, no leaks. He had to put a patch over a crack on the upper header and he soldered the drain pipe into the bung on the bottom.

Put it in 4-low and managed to get it up into 5th gear on my test drive this time.

Obviously it can't be done with a cracked drain-pipe-socket, but I use blue locktite when re-installing my drainpipe. It serves as a good sealant as well as a thread-locker and means you don't have to apply significant torque to the pipe to get a coolant-tight seal there.

Good advice.

Just digging around in parts bins and found some early horns, I prefer the sound of these to the 'newer' horns.

Also looking at emblems for the aprons. I like the top left emblem, but I only have one of them...maybe I can get ridefastflyfar to add it to his next batch of castings...

I applied for a special license plate...apparently 'TROOPY' or any variation of it 'TRU P' 'TRUPI' means 'tripping on acid'...who knew?

So my application was DENIED! by the DMV.

I think they've gone silly by banning it over such an obscure meaning... Goes to show what a joke the whole personalised plates business is in..

Yeah they prevent s*** like that and nobody knows the obscure meaning and then they mis blatantly obvious ones they shouldn't have ok'd. I have that other emblem. I had been collecting parts to make the troopy look old when I owned it. Here's the mate to that emblem on my wall.
