thanks for this thread, going into different auto stores proves pain, the greases i did find with moly in them they only have 2 tubes of. Pain in ass!

julstirn, ring your local NAPA stores if you haven't already. Here in so-cal I called 4 NAPA's and one store had an assortment including the Valvoline Palladium, Synpower, Mobil, etc.
Grainger apparently carries the Palladium as well (among others) and if not stocked at your nearest branch, can typically ship them there pretty quickly.

i made a trip to the autozone thats a bit from me and got some valvoline stuff, looks to be right kind to use!

I got this stuff, looks like it meets the requirements. Will these work?

Valvoline Palladium (what many Mudders use) has EP additives plus 3% Molybdenum and appears to provide more protection then the Durablend. As mentioned previously it's available from NAPA stores; if they don't have any in stock they can order it.

From their web site:

"Valvoline’s Palladium grease is formulated with special lubricity, anti-wear and extreme pressure additives including molybdenum disulfide and is completely fortified with oxidation, rust and corrosion inhibitors. It displaces other greases as top-of-the-line quality products for severe applications and general purpose lubrication."

All these companies have 800 numbers. You could give Valvoline a call Monday and ask them which is the best grease they have for your birfields/steering knuckles; tell them the Factory Service Manual calls for a Molybdenum Disulfide Lithium NLGI 2 grease.

Yep, have used it a bunch, works just fine.

DuraBlend is also an EP heavy-duty automotive grease.

History has shown that birfs like moly grease in the proper quantity. The right side on mine had a cocktail of everything including wallyworld moly, when disassembled it looked great. The main mistake is not checking, properly filling, if run low/empty, birf wear happens quickly. There maybe slight differences between moly greases, but likely not significant to birf life.

Not sure of the moly percentage, but I topped up my knuckles with this stuff from autozone for $3.99/tube.

Looks pretty good. I checked their website, but they don't specify what the thickener is, is it Lithium?

Cheers!

Im having a hard time understanding everyones hang up with using aluminum complex or calcium sulphonate greases. I mean, I have demo'd against most all the greases mentioned here and have beaten them using indutry standard tests. It shocks me that the mystik above is mentioned. I laugh a little inside when I see a customer using that cause its a guaranteed sale for me at that point. I think some of the opinion here is that lithium base has beeen around so long that it cant be beaten? I guess my reply is with that type of thinking we shouldnt be using synthetic lubrication anywhere else. Some others have the opinion of doing exactly what the FSM says. Well if thats the decision we should do everything like the FSM says because its the "bible" of our cruisers. If we do so then we will be limiting ourselves to 1997 technology at best. I hope Im wrong with my assumptions. Thats why Im asking. I just dont understand the train of thought that leads to the decision that lithium base grease is the best for our vehicles.

With that said, out of the over the counter examples posted in this thread what would be your choice for our birfs?

Just for the record, I think aluminum greases are excellent. Some of the finest grease I have encountered has an aluminum thickener.

Yes it's lithium. In an effort to follow the FSM I found it at a good price, so I went with it. When I rebuild the knuckles I surely will search for the best grease I can find.

For those of you interested in synthetic lubricants, there is a topic here that touches on it. It seems to me (IMO) that the definition of "Synthetic" has changed a little over the last 20 years, sparking some debate. Hopefully I haven't made too much of an @$$ of myself :)

Yes, but if you wanted to bash motor oil, why dredge up a 6 yr old transfer case thread? Why not one of the other old threads that are closer to the topic?

Hey chewbacca:

tranny frank wants to play.

LOL

:lol::lol:

Good point. I stumbled upon that thread, I wasn't looking for one and just decided to throw that in there. For the record, I am not bashing motor oil, I am just not satisfied with ExxonMobil's lack of clarity on their base oils.

hi guys, i came across this grease, and wondering if it fits the requirments.
MBL Grease (450g)

went to some of my local auto shops but couldnt find any mention by the op.

Looks like it has a lithium thickener but no mention of any molybdenum additive (after some quick skimming of their site).

I use cat desert gold for birf, redline cv-2 for bearings... :hhmm:
