Charcoal Canister Replacement Option

Just bought the nicest used one I could find on eBay - $200 - claimed 171,000 miles on it.
Beware of used canisters. If the activated charcoal gets gasoline soaked, it becomes useless. A previous owner of my LC100 would top off the tank which led to gas contamination of the canister. I’m not sure how to check the state of the charcoal on a used one.

The only way is by weight which obviously is pretty difficult to get a eBay vendor to do. Yeah, I know it's a risk.

Well, it looks great...we'll see if it was a great value or if I threw $200 down the garbage disposal.
None of the hoses are cracked, sensor and valve look great. As long as it wasn't saturated, should be good.

Okay,

Well I swapped it in and initial testing reveals that it now starts first crank every time, instead of immediately on very first start of the morning and more difficulty/cranking throughout the day AND it's not building gas tank pressure anymore. So I'd say that I got what I paid for and probably bought myself between 60K-100K miles...time will tell.

This used one I bought off eBay was from a 1999 Lexus LX470 that was built 10/98 which is within 30 days of when mine came off the line and the seller claimed the Lexus had 171K on the odo so at this point I have no reason to think otherwise.

So I guess my advice at this early juncture is if you're going to buy used, pay a little more for a seller with great feedback and who states the miles on the used part, trying to get the lowest mile example you can find.

It'll still be a little bit of a crap shoot as to whether the part has been flooded out with gas or not.

Edit: The eBay seller of this item was toyspowersports and has a rating of 99.3% with 61K items sold.

Did you check the weight of the replacement? Wells has theirs listed as 5.2190lbs

My 2000 LC is doing exactly this; first crank of the morning perfect. Random starts while warm (grocery store for example) it will putter and die, and then crank and stumble alive on 2nd crank. Pressure in the tank when I remove the cap for filling..

Looks like the Tundra option is out of stock everywhere. May end up going used like you, or cutting mine open.

Now that I have two, I'm thinking of cutting my old one open and replacing the charcoal as well...gotta get my hands on a plastic welder.

The part number I used was 77740-33062 but I see there may be another one listed for late 90s rav4's, look very similar. There's also a Dorman one for the es300 that claims to be reverse engineered from the original, $190 currently. Obviously the Denso part is preferred but nice to know that if these run out in the supply chain there's at least a Chinese knockoff that might be available.
My Camry Charcoal Canister arrived yesterday afternoon; hopefully I can get around to installing it this week and seeing what improvements I get on all the same symptoms. As an aside, if someone does order it, just know that Impex will pack the box with- *checks notes* -20 Honda Lawnmower Gas Caps as packing peanuts...
