Just as a data point, I just followed these thorough directions and did my clutch. It was set to 112 degrees to open originally!!!:eek::eek: I reset the timing to 96 degrees which was as close as I could clearly see after several straigt confirmations. I also added two tubes of 6K fluid. I will report back on my findings from this modification although I'm amazed that the stock clutch setting was so high! I think that my Rod Davis Radiator really helped me here. I wanted to get this going prior to the end of our summer high heat temps to compare oranges to oranges as much as possible. Anyways, Rick, thanks again as always for helping us here.:cheers::cheers:

Change the fluid and swap the unit onto your rig. All of those that I have done have kicked major tail, IMHO the best clutch made for the 80.

I would but the 80 is now gone (black hub clutch is listed in the for sale section right now...)... :frown:

I did at least picked up a 4Runner to replace it with though. :D

Is this blue fan clutch for the fzj80's only; or fj80's also?

The "blue" refers to the 1FZ, FZJ80, clutch only.

Alright then.
I'm thinking of replacing my fan clutch also. I thought I'd check to see if it was available for my years also,,,but I guess not.

BTW, CDan....I sent you a PM. Can you add a fan clutch to that?

Just another data point. I replaced my fan clutch with the blue clutch two years ago. Last month I took a trip to the mountains in hot weather (106f) and the truck was running hot (215). There was a lack of roar from the fan clutch and clearly a lack of roar on startup. I just drained and replaced the fluid with the 6000cst fluid (two tubes). I now have the startup roar back. I will report on temps if we get any more hot weather.

I'm sorry but I just couldn't reread all 400+ posts here... :o

so I'll just ask: :)

what's the effect on mpg of all these more viscous fluids, tighter clutch etc?

If you want the best fuel economy, install the clutch and no fan. Just a thought.

J/K but you knew that Eric, right?:flipoff2:

oooh, a 100% sure answer... are you running for president or something? :D

No, but living in a swing state we are getting bombarded with these back-to-back political ads so maybe I'm brainwashed.

mmm.... maybe should leave the clutch out too since it would not be doing too much good, eh...? :D

I'm on an mpg improvement paranoid binge... Managed to get my mpg up from 33 to 40 already... :D:D:D And no, no HHO nonsense needed... :)

Bull Excrement!

yup, 40, and that's city driving...
I'll admit it's probably less in the dirt... :)
but that is fodder for another thread... :D

yup, I have a variable displacement system: 4.7L, 4.5L, 2.2L and 0.65L! :)

but back to the issue at hand. How much is the roar costing you all in MPG?

It actually increased my mileage about 14%! I'm thinking of welding the clutch together for 0% slippage, I might increase my mileage 20% or more.

Ohh wait are we still talkin cruisers here, gosh I'm so sorry, I was really referring to my Honda powered Go-Kart; damn if my centrifugal clutch wasn't slipping some here and there! Thought that welding it up would work wonders. :flipoff2: :D :flipoff2:

Now, Mr. e, how-do-ya like it now!?! :D :flipoff2: :D
