I was in Angel Fire driving to Pagosa last week, and I ended up just taking US64, but I was really, really tempted to swing through Red River to go look for your rig.

Next time I'm driving the faux-lux through I'll stop in.... Probably be a couple of weeks, but I'll be driving back down soon enough...

Please do! It'd be nice to meet you! (And check out your Toys)
;)

Looks good! Suggestion: buy a mini or 60 axle and just swap the whole knuckle assembly. Then you'd have discs, large pattern knuckles, common birfs, and Aisin hubs. Not a single downside in that list.

Dan

Yeah, you know, I even had a whole parts '84 Mini with a front axle that I was wanting to keep for just that reason, but wound up deciding that I would need a welder before I would need discs on this project, so I sold it instead to buy the welder. However, I think I just found an old 60 that looks like it's been sitting for awhile...:hhmm: Maybe I can work something out...

I'm just posting on here to see if you're making any more progress on the build- or if you're working too much!!

Awesome meeting you the the other day, and thanks for the help on Voodoo!!

Can't wait to see the wheels cleaned up and some TreadWright Mud's on the cruzah!!

Talk to you soon!

Hey Man!

It was my pleasure to meet you and you're little guy. I had a good time helping out and wish I lived closer so I could give you a hand whipping it out!

No, I haven't made much progress on Big Muddy lately, except I did put those wheels on there, and I changed a u-joint that was bad. Right now it's spring break in TX and OK, so we've been gearing up for the deluge of people coming in this weekend and through the next week. Hopefully after that though, I'll be able to make some progress again!

I also used the connector you gave me off of that other harness to hook my steering column switch back up, and take out the other switch the PO had put in. So nice to only have one switch and in the right spot to fire up the ol 'Cruiser! Although as soon as I put it in I figured out why the PO had done that!:bang: I had no power to my blinkers, wipers, and a couple of other things. After troubleshooting for a little bit, I figured out that the contacts in the old switch were almost completely gone. I added a drop of solder to each one to build them back up, and by doing so got power to everything, and it is working for now. I need to either buy another one ($20-$75 if you get it from Toyota) or find a thin sheet of copper that I can cut another set of contacts out of. (Which would be easy and I think would make great Tech)

I also put the wheels on and they're looking good, although I do want to blast them and go back to the grey like they were from the factory. (And order the two front hubcaps Which btw, the other three were an unexpected bonus and I really appreciate it!)

The only other thing that I have done, is put on the heater defrost hose you gave me, and boy, what a difference that makes! I need to get heater rebuild kit from Shane (AATLAS1X) so I can use the heater lever that Shelfboy1 sent me. (I made my own heater kit from hardware store bought insulation, but don't have the bushings for the lever.)

I'll try to post some pics later!

posin...

Just a couple of shots of my rig with the stock wheels that I got from ColoCruiserJeff:

I think that I'm going to have to take a leaf out of the rear springs. Not much flex compared to the front. I have a 100#'s or so of tools in the back and it doesn't help much.

(Sorry for the lousy pics! Took them with my cell phone :meh:)

Haven't got much done lately... Been busy, busy! Been looking for different work, found some, and now getting ready to move, so the 'Cruiser has kinda been put on the back burner I'm afraid. However, I did get a little done on it in between being crazy the last few days....

The springs that I had on the front were really soft and flexy, and the springs on the back were just unreal stiff, even with 125lbs or more in the back. Also, I had the shackles invert on me, So I called Alcan and had a chat with them and they were very helpful. After telling me that the rear springs were set up for quite a bit of wait, and for a very reasonable price they would build me replacement leaves to set up the springs as I would need them, I decided that was a good option, but didn't want to spend the time or money on that right now, I got the bright idea to put the back springs on the front and vice versa. Swapped them out, and very glad I did. The springs are honestly a little stiff for the front even, but tons better than being on the back and I'll bet they'll break in a little bit. Besides, a winch would just about be the perfect amount of weight to make them flex the way they should!:D:D:D

I built another set of 7/8ths over shackles as the other set went to the rear and they seem to be just right.

Not much progress, but every little bit helps!

Thanks Dan! Now I just need to sandblast them and paint them grey, and wrap them in some good rubber.

Btw, my wife and I are headed back into the southwestern corner of Colorado. We're going to help run a Bed and Breakfast just outside of Hesperus, Colorado. The invitation to come see us still stands, and we'd welcome the visit if you get over there to that corner of Colorado.

After

Just thought that I would post a picture of my results with the springs... The springs that are now on the front are awefully stiff, but they are much better on the front. Glad I swapped them! I think that they'll work out pretty good, once that they have been run a little longer on the heavy front.

Flexin one way...

Nice job

I also bought my first 40 recently and have been reading though the build threads for info and inspiration and there is no shortage of that in this forum. The big money frame off builds are great but i am really enjoying the "econo" builds with minimal tools and space.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks HrznChaser! Kind words like that always make it seem even more worth it!

Progress... Slow but sure.

So I know it's been awhile since I posted, but I'm still around and as much into 'Cruisers as ever! Long story short, my wife and have moved to just outside Durango, Co (a lot closer to 'home' in Pagosa Springs, Co than we were when we were in Red River, Nm) and are now managing the beautiful www.BlueLakeRanch.com .

So between moving, training for a new job, driving to Florida and back for my little sister's wedding, working 50 hours a week, and doing some repairs on my property in Pagosa preparing for new renters, I have managed to get a few things done. I finally ordered tie rod ends and a rebuild kit for my carb from Kurt at www.cruiseroutfitters.com Super nice guy, great to deal with, and ships your stuff out quick, as I'm sure that many of you already know. I did rebuild the carb, but haven't got a chance to do the tie rods ends yet. (Maybe next weekend.) While I had the carb off, I noticed my intake manifold is cracked and since I didn't have time to mess with it, just slapped the carb back on. In the next few weeks, I plan on taking the manifolds off, having them machined flat, and getting the intake ceramic coated after drill stopping the crack. I will then put them back together with a couple of gaskets and a heat insulating plate. (You guys have any thoughts where the best/cheapest place is to get those?)

Another thing I have worked on is the springs. I bought a set of Alcans that were set up to someone else's specs, so between that and "Cruiser lean" (which I am convinced is caused by the drivers side positioning of the ol' 2F and transmission) I have had a heck of a time getting them to where I like them. The springs on the front were to stiff/short. So after swapping leaves and springs around several times and still not liking it, I finally just took the 3rd leaf out of the passenger's side front spring pack, and it seems to be close to what I'm looking for. The driver's side has had a good (read better) shackle angle because of the extra weight sitting on that side of the frame. Since taking the leaf out of the passenger side it has improved that shackle angle quite a bit and has not seemed to adversely affected the handling. (You guys with more experience with springs/handling have any thoughts?) I think I might also try putting a 3/8ths plate between the rear pas. side axle and spring pack to correct the rest of the "Cruiser lean." Once I am satisfied with how everything is sitting and working, I am going to figure out where I want the mounts for the 12" Doetsch Tech's I picked up from a 'Mud member in the 'Mud Classifieds.

Perhaps the biggest visual difference that has been made, is the new 33x10.50x15's that I'm riding on. To make a long story short, I found and bought 4 used BFGoodrich all terrains for $200. They came with some nice Aluminium rims that had been painted black. Two of the tires were not much good, but I figured that I could turn around and sell the wheels and almost pay for the two new tires I would need. Well, 4 days later, the people that I now work for came up and handed me a gift certificate for a set of four brand new tires! They were originally going to put tires on my pickup, but since I can get tires for that through Treadwright so cheap ($507 to my door for 285/75-16s) I asked them If I could use the certificate for my 'Cruiser instead because Treadwright doesn't make the 33x10.50's like I wanted. They were cool with it, so I now ride on four brand new BFGoodrich KM2s! (The two good used BFGoodrich all terrains are now my good spares.) I am a very happy, thankful man!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Amazing pics - musta been a great day. Your rig is looking awesome and I love the way your new tires came out. Makes me want some KM2's bad :crybaby:

COE!!!!! WE NEED UPDATES!! What'cha been up to? We gonna go wheeling / camping before the snow really starts a flyin?? Not that I mind campin and wheelin in the winter time....just more family friendly!

Hope you're doing well - let's catch up!

Hey guys, been pretty busy on the 'Cruiser actually, but haven't had time to post much up... I'll try to get some picks up.

I've had the intake manifold crack fixed...

Built myself some custom shock towers to mount front shocks...

Cleaned and primed up some rusty spots before I put the top back on for winter... (And bought some new hard top seals from Cruiser Corps)

Used 1" schedule 80 pipe to build a beefier tie rod since I bent the old one and also replaced all tie rods with ones I bought from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters...

I'll try to update with pics soon!

(And Jeff, snow's flying already, but let's go anyway! We can either go wheelin in the snow, or we can run down to Farmington and go crawl around the rocks where it's warmer and dry!)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
