crankshaft gear

So if you add

250 for the MAF billet RV cam
150 for the OEM cam gears
1000 for the TBI fuel injection
130 for the Downey TBI linkage
120 for oem gasket and seal kit
140 for the head to be shaved and valves done
70 for the Downey air cleaner
373 for the engine parts
640 for the engine machining
120 for the CCOT lifters
100 piston rings
100 for some gay paint

So did you end up going with the OEM crankshaft gear with the rubber dampening? I think Toyota makes a solid gear but I can't find the specifics on which year they may have come on.

Don't know yet. I just ordered an 87 gear set. Will pick it up tomorrow and take some pics and inform on part #.

Alittle head scratching. Got my TBI harness yesterday from affordable-fuel-injection. So I started painting the TBI unit and getting it to not match the rest of the engine.

WHat has me puzzled is the Downey TBI linkage. I'm using all Downey components arounf the TBI. 2f to tbi adapter, cable mounting plate, cable and the pedal kit they sell. SO you would think it would all bolt up right? Well sort of. The plate they sell that goes in between the TBI and the cast adapter has me stumped. Nothing for the linkage fits right. The L bracket they sent me is facing the wrong way and the mounting plate makes it almost impossible to route fuel lines. I will take pics later but didn't know if anyone had any ideas or have a clue what I'm talking about.

I'm debating on scraping the plate and just making my own linkage.

Marshall. My 40 is in storage at my Pops shop this month so I can focus on other projects. I'll be up there next weekend - let me know if you need any pics of the Downey FI setup...

Looking good. I know mine runs sweet - but you're doing a few extra mods I didn't do when I rebuilt - will be interesting to see it run.

I havn't gone thru the whole thread - but I buffed out and polished my valve cover - that would look sweet with all that oddball paint!

Bill that would be great. Finally took some pics.

Here you can see what I dealing with on the fuel lines and the cable plate. I had to bend the fittings I got from AFI. I'm thinking of trying to find longer ones so I can bend the one on the right all the way to the left and then back under.

You can see how close it comes to the plate. Ignore the pant flaking off I had just painted them when I decided they needed to be bent.

Now notice the throttle cable position. Why could the plate just be extednded out further? What the heck am I doing wrong? The cable will not even go throught the L bracket the hole is too small.

Oh. My. God. I think I turned Gay just looking at that motor...

my wife saw these pics and just asked me if you are gay........

:), that's some funny s***.

Lol. No. But the engine is. If you ever get to the chance to meet me you will understand.
I did this as kind of a joke. Nobody ever looks under the hood of my cruiser. But if they do they are instore for an experience into Big Gayness.:princess:

Marshall, I think with your skills you could fab a new bracket.

Cant wait to see this in person one day though.

reference on fuel lines

Cut from a different site.

Fuel delivery
The first problem is getting fuel in and out of the TBI. The inlet is a 16mm o-ringed Saginaw power steering fitting, and the outlet is 14mm. There are 2 options to connect to it. Aeroquip and Earls Performance Fittings make adapters to -6AN male outlets. That is fine and dandy, but then you are locked into using several of their pretty but expensive and massively overkill adapters and hoses. I chose to go with fuel line repair kits you can get at your local parts store. They will likely not know what you are talking about so take the following information - Dorman 800-153 16mm TBI to 3/8" steel fuel line and 800-151 14mm TBI to 5/16" steel fuel line $13 each. You can slip standard 5/16" EFI fuel hose over the steel lines and use EFI hose clamps to secure the hose. Just cut the steel line and bend it how you want the inlet and outlet to face.

There is at least 2 (prolly more) different linkages on TBIs. To get it to work right with that plate you may need to find a different TBI. Mine lines up better, I think its a 93 S10. I think the later ones had the fancier linkage like yours.

Well I ditching the plate and redoing the fuel lines. Picked these up at Advanced Auto in the help section. Around $12 each. These should wrap around the rear of the valve cover very well.

Gear Update?

Don't know yet. I just ordered an 87 gear set. Will pick it up tomorrow and take some pics and inform on part #.

Any updates on the crankshaft gear? Thanks.

Yes the one I ordered for an 87 was exactly the same thing I took off with the rubber isolator. I've decided to go with it. If it lasted 250k on the last motor a new one will last about the same.

Edit 12/27/07 Solid gear is not a Toyota part but non oem. SO that is the best place to start with. I'd suggest NAPA to start with.

Are you sure you're pulling the linkage from the correct location? It looks like there is another cable linkage attachment point on the lower portion that is more OEM looking and closer to the bracket. Have you considered spinning the whole thing around 180 degrees? It might make the fuel lines and throttle cable easier. What have your buddys at Downey said about the problem?

Nice Big Gay Thread BTW:grinpimp:

Phil

I thought about that but it throw the air cleaner off as well as sticks the hrottle cable where I would have to buy another one as well as put the fuel lines out even further away from the fuel tank.
