I built 3 + pigs based on that and I'm still not done and still not driving. I wish mine looked done also. Maybe I forgot to factor in the time value of $5K based on an 8 year project. Maybe I'm still good.

Someone wiser than me can confirm - I think it is $5k per year...

After considerable thought and ciphering, I’ve come to realize it’s an average of 5K....per system.

Worked on getting knuckle job done this afternoon. Really enjoying how far the sun comes into the garage this time of year. Hits the back wall of my 44 foot shop. Doing a little work on the bobcat as well. Glad to have such a big space to work in! Happy Holidays to all!

I’ve been occupied with getting the Benz motor to do a full rotation of the crankshaft. This was a running motor that I’ve been cleaning up. Adjusted the valves and it was still rotating by hand with no issues. Drained oil to work on pan modifications. Still rotated easily for a month or better. Then it wouldn’t. I ‘be been soaking the top end in Marvel Mystery Oil for the last month. Currently waiting on a special head bolt socket to arrive. Something is keeping the number one piston from completing the revolution. Way more involved in this motor than I wanted, but I’m learning new skills. Pictures to follow soon of what I find.

No pan on right now. Rockers are removed, and all valves are closed. Still won’t go a full rotation. Engine was covered unless I was working on it. Still a mouse could’ve started a nest? Will find out soon. Meanwhile the injection pump is staring at me begging for an upgrade in plunger size. Do I need it? Not really. Do I want it? More and more the longer it takes to get it back together. 50+ more horsepower could be fun.😎

With glow plugs and injectors out it spins . Wish I had a flexible bronchoscope from my OR days. I think I could pull a prechamber and look into the cylinder. Pulling the head in next couple of days I hope.

Well that’s promising, do those items index in any way when they install?

I was going to say the spark plugs are too long...;)

Part of pulling the head requires removing the timing chain rail. It’s held in by a 13 mm bolt and a pin. The pin is removed by a special slap hammer from Mercedes. Costs around $280.
When I had my 4bt in my Town Wagon, I made a slap hammer for removing the injectors. I took a metric bolt that fit into the threaded portion of my home made slap hammer. The threaded portion of the retaining pin in the slide rail is a 6x1.25. Bought a bolt for $1.09 at local hardware store. Drilled a hole in the slap hammer bolt and welded the 6mm bolt to it. Worked like a charm, and I still have my Cummins injector removal tool. Saved a couple hundred dollars and didn’t have to wait on shipping.

Got the head off. All looks good inside. Still cannot rotate a full revolution. Guess the upper oil pan is next to come off so I can check the bottom end. It’s got to be something simple.

Well that’s good news but super odd, you definitely need to let us know what you find!

Really confused now...
You and me both. The more I read about these motors, the more I think it’s a timing chain issue. Caused by me with a slight reverse ( counter clockwise ) rotation. Thinking of pulling the front cover to see chain set up completely. Argh the problems I cause myself!,🤬🤑🤪

Haven’t had any shop time lately. That’s a bad thing because I find myself reading build threads and spending more money on parts. Have 3 grills all in useable to good shape. Couldn’t resist getting this NOS one though. Do I have a problem? Should I be attending a support group..... oh wait this is the support group.
