The shims are still intact. I haven’t even gotten it close to being torqued before binding starts. Thanks for the link, will take some time to read it later. No garage time today, wood cutting/splitting is today’s agenda.

Spent some time searching the web about Toyota third members. SOR’s diagraham shows a spacer (#25) that I don’t recall seeing. Thinking this might be the culprit. Will look next time I get out to the garage.

Looking closer, the spacer and one shim are present. The spacer is beveled, is this normal? I have a set of shims on the way from SOR.

Do you have a picture of the spacer?
The above pic is of the spacer, or at least what the SOR page calls a spacer. I’ve seen reference to 2.xxx” spacer, but neither diff had one.

No such animal on front, didn’t notice one on the back either. This was a parts rig at Classic Cruisers when I bought it. No drivetrain, so maybe parts scavenged from differentials? The pinion nut on the rear was only finger tight when I removed the flange to replace the dust over. Once again, down just a little bit further in the ole rabbit hole! 🐷

I watched that video and several others. I guess learning something new at 68 is a good thing! Looks like I will be rechecking the rear differential as well. I can always count on this site and the knowledge available to help keep me going in the correct direction.

I apologize if I’m causing confusion, my original question “solid spacer or crush sleeve” was meant to confirm at some point your third member didn’t get a crush sleeve and if it did you knew they are a one time use.

I'm thinking you might be missing a part or two or maybe you have a crush sleeve that hasn't been crushed yet. Sometimes that crush sleeve can be very hard to start .

After all of your input, I am convinced things are missing. No spacer or crush sleeve is evident, so will be spending some more money. So glad to find this out now, instead of on the first drive. You guys really keep an amateur on track!

I finally managed to get some time in the garage longer than a few minutes. With good lighting and a second pair of reading glasses, I figured things out. The pinion spacer was there. I cleaned and reassembled with a new shim. Better, but still s little tight. Added a second new shim for a total of three, and seems to be good. Thanks for all of the help , insight, and suggestions. Now where was I......

I built 3 + pigs based on that and I'm still not done and still not driving. I wish mine looked done also. Maybe I forgot to factor in the time value of $5K based on an 8 year project. Maybe I'm still good.

Well I just recalculated my total so far. Must be done cause I’m a little over 5K. Just wish it looked done...or drove.:)

Thought I would spend a little time on the Benz engine. Getting started on reassembly of parts I’ve removed and cleaned. It’s been on the engine stand without oil for several months. It turned easily with a socket a couple months ago. Today, I started turning it over but met resistance. It was hard enough that I really didn’t want to force it. Soaked it in marvel mystery and came inside. Hope nothing bad is going on.
