Lovely vise. I refreshed a friend’s 974 about a year ago.

would be interesting to machine new jaw pads for that one

@e9999 Yes. Parker's have, hands down, the most complex jaw architecture. They are pinned at the top.

Tore apart the Athol 41/2 vice apart. Looks good. It will soak in diesel/ATF we use for parts washing. Then grease and assemble.

I am not separating the the screw from the front jaw. Don’t think it needs it.

I got a lead on a 5” reed fixed base. What do they usually go for?

@ceylonfj40nut If it is a "4 hole" 105, then it is a $500 vise all day long. If it's the older 3 hole, about 300-350. The 4 hole Reeds are built like a tank!

It is a reed 105 four hole.

@RUSH55 Older Athols have "cast in" jaws (non replaceable). This perfectly demonstrates the difference in two quality vises; the medium duty Desmond and the heavy duty Athol of similar size. Great pick up! Look familiar @ceylonfj40nut ?

@KT40 Just looking again at your Tiny German vise. Polish and German vises can all claim the oddity of having a backward moving dynamic jaw (Heuer, and FPU come to mind). Pretty neat to see.
Sorry. Yep Athol I have is similar.

So got this for a good price today. This will round out what I need together with the 41/2 Athol. All chicom vises will be sold.

^ I like the tall jaws. I would miss the pipe jaws.
But me personally if I say Firm on price in an ad and somebody makes a lower offer, I won't bother to respond.

Don’t see many 5 inchers for that low. I’d say it’s fairly reasonable (take that with a grain of salt). Would be even better if there was a solid source for those pipe jaws.
There’s a really nice 3” Charlie Parker in my area, that’s missing a pipe jaw, and the guy wants $200 firm, if that gives you a comparison.

I will say for the 100th time... I LOVE Columbians! That vise weighs more than 70 pounds. The missing pipe jaws are a shame (but very common). You can fab some replacements rather easily. This one has been used and used hard. @RUSH55 is right, he is high but not crazy high. I would be a buyer at 225-250 but again... I dig them.

A consideration for combination vises are where and how to mount as they are very tall. Most put these on a pedestal and not a bench.
