Finished the column....what a world of difference all the new bearings and tighter u-joints made. Probably need to put in a steering box to column shaft at some point.....ours is a little beat.....much like the rest of the truck. I'm sure a new steering box would be nice too. This one probably never saw an easy day.

I don't know where Saddam is right now but I know he's not happy......today was wheel switch out day.

New steering wheels transform these old trucks.

Did you retain the tilt/tele column? Curious if it's a direct swap to the stationary one. I could use that with my long ass legs.

Tilt only as far as I know.....all my 70s have tilt and tilt only. I see an option for a collapsible column with tilt but that's in the shaft for safety I would guess...maybe there were fixed columns for some markets. No idea. Both columns we used were collapsible. I don't remember on the 79 #1if it had a collapsible section. It must have.

The Rav4 interior has a telescopic and tilt wheel. It's pretty cool but WAY different from the steel dash columns.

Spent a little bit more time on cleaning things up.....wiring and vacuum hoses on Troopy over the last few days. NOTHING was hooked up properly under the hood. So we tore in which resulted in this coming off....

I grew up spending a good amount of time at the beach always doing different board sports. If you've ever body surfed in shore break you know that sand goes EVERYWHERE.....places you can't imagine. I believe this carburetor might have spent some time body surfing at the Wedge in CA. This thing had dirt in places dirt shouldn't be....and a lot of dirt in those places. And the crazy thing is, the truck ran really well. Smoother than my 1FZ FE motors. Hard to believe.

Even more hard to believe when you take a look at the base plate. Yikes. New one ordered.

My FJ40 carb rebuilds have usually resulted in purchasing a Weber and being miserable so I left this one to the pro....

Had to repair the giant mess under the dash...we think most of it was turn signal related. The plugs and connectors were so badly corroded that we couldn't salvage them.....and finding a replacement plug thru our guy wasn't happening. So we opted for this fix. Would be great to find a new harness for the truck at some point but for now this will do.

Old blower motor was loud....popped in a new one. In the US inventory which is nice and it was cheap. Whisper quiet now.

Ha....for sure there is.

502 GM Performance crate motor. Made 480HP on the engine dyno.....nice setup. Easy setup. Ordered it from the dealer, showed up the next day, took it to the speed shop, they did their thing....and in it goes.

Tackling the front end on the Troopy this week.....it is.....well....interesting. Lots of home brewed fixes. Lots of RTV in places where RTV shouldn't be....oil in places where grease should be. And 'other' things.

Assuming this is a spacer for a caliper bolt that is not OEM....and the "spacer" is most likely missing from another part of the truck.

Some kind of really hard glue....like hot glue. That will keep them from leaking. Also, broken studs on both hubs.

Looks good....maybe we can get a few more miles out of it.

This was really weird....we bent the bolt back and it came right out. Weird.

This was the better side of the 2.

One of the bigger surprises with this truck....the birfields are like brand new.

All the other parts are starting to look much better.....

Apologies if I missed it somewhere but do you have a part number for that new steering wheel please ?

45100-60190-03 steering wheel
45130-60220-B0 horn button

Amayama seems to be the best bet for both of them......wheel ships from Japan, horn button ships from UAE. Looks like a LONG wait for the wheel from them.

It is a direct swap with some part finagling. I just converted my 70 from stationary to tilt steering.

That's pretty cool.....probably a fair amount of parts needed?
