Good choice on oil.
I decided to stay tried and true ;)
30F this morning, didn’t use grid heater and she fired right up. Last winter no starting issues and it was in the teens at the ski resorts but I used grid heater. I’m wondering what temps near 0F will be like when starting in the morning.

Had a Saturday with nothing planned. Decided to go up and see the aftermath of the Riverside Fire and access to Ladee Flats OHV area.

What’s a trip without mans best friend.

The forest service road going to Ladee Flats was closed at the highway and had forest service personnel preventing people from going up. Decided to try the upper end via Tumala Mtn Rd.

Unfortunately I found a concrete blockade at the North Fork Clackamas bridge preventing further access toward Ladee Flats.

Headed up in elevation getting to snow at 3,400’. These Speedhut Gauges not only show your trip but elevation.

Got up to a great viewpoint overlooking Tumala Mtn. This was a great spot until the road washed out.

Shot the 9MM and played with Reload in the snow. Then went exploring. This elevation is prime for wild Christmas Trees. Found two likely candidate’s. These are Noble Fir which are nicely layered and hold needles very well. We often have our tree up a month. There’s nothing like having a fresh wild cut tree in the mountains.

Climbed up to 4,000’ for some more fun in the snow.

It’s amazing what 500’ of elevation can do.

The comparison between a battery alone vs battery + supercapacitor is remarkable.

Got done with work and had time to get the new Hungry Diesel lift pump installed.
The stock lift pump.

The new Hungry Diesel lift pump. Threaded 1/4” stainless 90 and nipple on the suction side.

Installing the new pump. My only dilemma was the pressure line off the power steering pump but just had to loosen and tilt down a few degrees.

Installed the fuel line, bled the pump and plumbed the line to supply fuel filter and VE pump.

Installed and fired right up.
Just got home. I noticed right away while it was idling that the 4BT was idling smoother. Headed home I felt more response and peppier. It was quicker on the throttle with more power. More low end power. Before I had some groan when shifting from 3rd to 4th on a hill climb at 40mph. I didn’t notice any groan now most likely due to the higher volume lift pump getting fuel more efficiently to the VE pump. It was more powerful accelerating. I’ve been so happy with this build and just one more mod that makes it even better. Now looking forward to the Holset HX30 super turbo install. Need to get some special adapters and that will be ready to go.

I got to see this rig in person and it made me miss my fj60! You do nice work. Here is a picture of my airbox..l don't know if Donaldson still makes a metal one. The filter is huge. I modified the intake to clamp up to the stock 80 fender doo-dad. It probably restricts the air but seems to work fine. I thought about a snorkel but I doubt I will ever need one.
The filter spins the air and big stuff goes into a can on the end. Some housings have a little burp valve that ejects the larger particles and debris..

What turbo are you running now? I’m curious to hear how the HX30 super performs.

The HX30, not the super yet.
Are they physically the same size?

I’m looking for a turbo blanket and I can’t find one made specifically for the super. I don’t have my super with me and I don’t speak turbo fluently so I’m reduced to trolling the internets. Any help will be appreciated. 😁

Model: Holset HX30W Super
Comp Wheel = 46/78mm flows 38-39lb/min, capable of 320-330hp on a 4bt diesel
Turbine Wheel = 65/52mm
Turbine Housing = Waste Gated 6cm for fast spooling
The HX30
compressor wheel = 44/71mm
Turbine Wheel = 65/52mm

Please post up if you find a blanket that works.

I typed in "turbo blanket sizing" in google and brought up the following chart:

How do I determine what size turbo blanket I need for my turbocharger?
Hot Side DiameterUniversal Turbo Blanket Sizes:
5 to 6 inchesT3 turbo blanket
6 to 7.5 inchesT3/T4 turbo blanket
7.5 to 8.5 inchesLarge T4 turbo blanket
8.5 to 10.5 inchesT6 turbo blanket

Armed with this info you can measure the size of your exhaust housing and find something universal. I would suspect you are in the T3 sizing with any of the HX30 variants running a 6cm turbine housing. Just be aware of wastegate arms and such, you may need to modify a cover to fit.

Banjo bolt with bleeder screw on the fuel line between the fuel filter and VE pump.

I got a tapped banjo bolt and installed a Glowshift 30psi fuel gauge. The gauge came with a 1/8” brass street 90 which made seeing the gauge

Even with a liquid gauge the needles still oscillates. Have a 1/8” brass ball valve at work I can put on to help stop the gauge from swinging.

Nothing technical to contribute. I just hate how clean your engine bay always looks:rofl:

Tonight got the HX35 compressor elbow.
Took out the HX30 super and check to make sure it’fit.

Holset HX30 super has a flanged oil feed supply, DieselTuff has a oil feed kit for $69 + freight.

If I can find the right flange I could make one for a lot less. Help with sourcing a flange would be awesome.

Is bolted half of exhaust HX30 and HX30 Super interchangeable?
2B493012-4BE6-43C3-97F2-E24BE1DBF751.jpeg

My HX30 has a Marmon flange welded on which would be nice if I could just remove it and bolt it to the HX30 Super. Also wondering if the oil return flange is the same as the HX30?
