Chrome is the de-rigueur item on vehicles in KSA that want to display a touch of luxury. I painted my Troopy bumper and door handles pewter the moment I bought it.

Very interested to see where you go with it. A little elbow grease, cleaning up of the mechanicals, and some seat upholstering and you're good to go! If you got kids, they'll love riding in the back.

Sorry for the radio silence, 2018 was a pretty busy year. Spent most of it taken care of my dad, then in early 2019 when he moved into a care facility I had a lot of free time. While working at the Volkswagen proving grounds as a test driver in the evenings I started work on my new shop during the mornings. Finished up at 1200 square-foot steel building and got the final sign off in October. Then I started thinking about what I want to do with the troopy

I got the troopy running well enough to know That the engine was strong and did not need to be rebuilt. But the more time I spent inspecting the body and everything else I realized she needs a lot of love. So I rolled her into the shop earlier this week and got started on the teardown. I don’t have the skill set or budget to do a true museum quality restoration But I think she’s going to have to come off the frame and have the body stripped repaired and a new coat of paint. From everything I’ve seen the frame is fine but I’ll need obviously to do some replacement and repair as I go. Since she came from Saudi Arabia she doesn’t have a heater and I’m not sure if I want to install a heater or a whole new HVAC system

i would go for the whole new system... you can get heat with it... but... where u are who cares? lol

I thought it be good to do a front and rear a/c system in something that large... like in vans

At this point all I know is “nothing “ It’s not an option. I guess I have a little time to think about it

So the first afternoon I got the front end removed hoods fenders bumper and started on the plumbing and electrical. The fenders and likely apron are toast which I knew from the beginning. Day two I finished up plumbing and electric and then stripped the dash and the interior. Day three, today I had planned on a light duty of just working on vinyl and windows but it was kind of chilly this morning and I didn’t wanna pry 40-year-old weatherstrip Off in 50° weather so I started on the rear doors and the undercarriage. Doors came off fine but I realized I didn’t have a tool to lower the spare so I fab something together in the tradition of best bush repairs. I think that split rim is a goner. Just getting started on the rear sliders as far as I can tell they’re just glued in once you take all the weatherstripping off Whatever it is they glue thousand with it does not want to budge but his nearest I can tell there’s no mechanical fasteners. I am a little curious how I’m going to replace the felt inside of those things if anyone has any tips I’d love to hear it

OK folks time for a couple questions. Number one the sliding window tracks are glued in really well and all of the surrounding sheet-metal is clean and rust free any downside to leaving them in place and painting around them, the exterior and interior weatherstripping will greatly overlap any of the new paint.

And secondly am I nuts for trying to save the corner window gaskets? They’re in good shape but I don’t feel good about trying to pop those out and not break the windows. Welcome your feedback . Thanks!

Great find! I have loved Troopys since the first one I saw. City Racer Llc OT @Racer 65? Here on mud may have the gaskets, or @ToyotaMatt. I am also in Arizona and would love to see your Troopy sometime. Tom

In would clean up and paint existing tracks, pretty sure gaskets for the Troops’s are out there👍

Yup, I'm jealous.

You swiped a nice 45 form Montana, my dream fishing rig.

Arizola near Cottonwood.

Removing the sliding windows you need to
Remove the pinchweld inside the cab, then I see the outer w/s are removed. The sash is glued to the upper side panels with a butyl strip. That is that tar like stuff. You can separate it by heating the window lip from the inside (where the pinchweld was holding) with a heat gun, or stick blade between the panel and the sash and cut the butyl through.
The real art is to remove the butyl from both the panels and the sash once the windows off.
The full window kit is available in the US.
ask me how I know :grinpimp: ah, and if you change all rubbers the corner windows shouldn’t be an exemption either. Also if you want to paint the whole lot you need to remove them and the seals often sacrificed for keeping the glass .

Thanks for the tips. I’ll cut out the corner window seals when the time comes

No dramatic moves forward today just taking out lots of screws and bolts I got all of the mounting bolts off the body and all of the roof bolts out except one or two left on the windscreen. I got a little cocky when they all came out in the back and then the last one snapped off on me.

I did find this paint color on the reverse of a cover panel in the cab, not sure if that’s primer or the original color on the body I’ll have to do some more research not sure if I like it that much

Looks like a OEM color called Dune Beige, but not sure if three digit color code? @GA Architect may chime in on this.
