Well here we go, my third LC, but first FJ45-Troopy. Still formulating a game plan, but here are at the facts of the case. A 1982FJ 45 from Saudi Arabia. Runs strong pulls good and so far no leaks! The bones are good and solid and the body is fair with a good degree of Bush bodywork and body filler but overall not a bad place to start.

Some random thoughts, will keep 100% OEM when budget and availability allow, however I simply cannot get my heart and brain wrapped around chrome versus pewter . I consider changing the color of a Bolt on part and acceptable treatment for an old vehicle, given any future owner could change it back with little pain. I think it has an oversize fuel tank but haven’t had a chance to check yet. First step is to get it stripped down and clean to see what I’m working with and get the mechanicals in order

I think the steepest learning curve may surround the eomissions components. Since it is an import from Saudi Arabia I don’t know what it started with. The good news is I have it legally registered and insured in a non-omissions portion of Arizona so I can drive it without fear of seizure

I need to carefully clean the data tag, and I did notice no Vin tag on the door jam. The frame numbers match and everything else looks good so far. I could be mistaken but I think it has a troll whole carburetor

Checked compression, not bad 130-138 and mostly uniform. Valve clearance was pretty good but all exhaust were too tight

The lights and wipers all work and I reluctantly pulled off the glued carpet on the dash and found a mostly in tact dash pad

Thanks - and so glad your wait is almost over.....longest 4 months of your life???

Yeah, tomorrow is the day when it gets delivered. Sucks to be on the oil rig right now. Have to wait till I get back home on Thursday.

Great to see some more Saudi spec knowledge forming here!

Not a lot of love for the chrome bezel but my vote is to keep it. I assume you have the big drums up front? Are you going to rebuild them or swap to discs?

This above project has been my top priority....

Plans are chrome bez, stock drums on the corners.. still need to get it drivable, got it registered, but difficult to find affordable insurance. My current carrier said the vin was on a list- not for us market????? I’ve never heard that one.

I ordered a 3 gauge temporary cluster so I can have accurate oil and temperatures while working on her need to get it in operation

My 45 orginated from Ozzy land and State Farm had no problems covering it before or after the rebuild.

Subbed, sweet troopy! I also got a stated value policy from Farmers insurance no problem on my Australian troopy.

Very interesting bumperettes. Never seen those on a troopy before. Normally see a wide step unique to the troopy. Generally seen these bumperettes on pickups. Do they mount with fixed nuts? Been looking for the pickup bumperettes for a while. Middle East seems to have them standard on the pickups. Have been able to source part from Australia but they mainly got traybacks without any factory style bumper.

Wouldn't mind seeing your troopy some time. Only only one I've ever had a good look was a 84 HJ47RV from Australia in a wrecking yard. Not many good panel left on that one and got stripped pretty quick.

Morning, I think there in stock holes, but the armor plate “steps” are after market. The seller told me this was in service as a school bus. May explain the steps.
Welcome to see it anytime

Not convinced those are aftermarket steps. Looks a lot like the one used on pickups in the Middle East including the plate on top. Pretty sure these were never used on the Troopy but available in the region new years ago. May have been bought as easy way to create a step for this makeshift school. Another member in the Middle East is currently restoring a late model troopy that was used as a school bus.

I found a more elegant means for fitting a mechanical gauge set for my boy while I a sort out the instrument cluster. I found this for the Oil Pressure gauge:

1/8-27 NPT Female to 1/8 BSPT Male Thread Adapter GS-FA_BSPT

and it fits like a glove
