Amsoil dealer recommended mtf in the tc which smooths out engagement.
This guy does know oil based on bitog posts. With that said, I’m not going to run atf in my tc when other (imo superior) options that meet defined Toyota spec exist.

Is someone recommending ATF in our TC?

2022 - present tundras use atf in the transfer case, so says the manual
not the same application as the OP, but interesting

Not here, but via another forum - tacoworld.

FWIW, I do trust a lot of what the same recommending user has to offer on bob oil guy but this is a time I have a difference of opinion.

The above post was about MTF.. is he recommending ATF as well?

The old stuff in the can has been discontinued. There’s a new part number (has letters in it) that comes in a regular plastic oil quart container, goes for about $50, and is made by ENEOS.

I went with Ravenol/blauparts myself last time, great option.

ah got it. Curious now what the part number is. Nothing came up on the Toyota site for 75W.

I will stick with the Ravenol then!
Previous owner had the shop do it and they used MasterPro 80W90. Seems like an odd choice? That was just 13K miles ago so I am gonna get that out of there.

The part # on the bottle and on my dealer invoice don't come up with the right bottle when you search online, but I believe this is the new stuff and it's made by ENEOS.

I wonder why it's so hard to find it on the parts websites at other stores...

Liqui Moly offers a GL-4 75W LV fluid and it is priced well. Does anyone have experience with it? Top Tec MTF 5100 SAE 75W - https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/us/top-tec-mtf-5100-sae-75w-p004182.html#tab-label-approvalsandspecifications-title

Edit: Received a quick reply from Liqui Moly and they say this fluid is not recommended for this application and to use the factory fluid.

Apparently a lot of Tacoma guys have run it with no issues in their transfer case that calls for liquid gold. Fwiw, liqui moly now lists Toyota 08885-81081 specifically as a replacement recommendation.

From my BITOG research, this one comes the closest to the OEM fluid cSt viscosity @100C (5.7) at only 6. Redline and HPL sit at 6.3. Ravenol sits at 7.4.

There are a lot of owners that have run a bunch of different brands and I have yet to see or hear of any detrimental reports from anyone long term. I think people can pick any of the ones that have been mentioned and you will be totally fine. Will it affect mileage with different viscosities? A little, but probably inconsequential.

Gonna try my luck with the Ravenol.

I run Mobil Delvac 75W90 full synthetic. Around $12 a quart, but hard to find locally so I get it from Summit Racing. It's an HD truck oil and one of the few that lacks a limited slip additive. The cost is low enough that I change it every couple of years, but it normally looks almost perfect when I drain it.

My LC2011 transfer case and others is like a 2 speed manual transmission with synchromesh (yellow metal) alignment gears, and a chain.
-So with this limited info about our transfer case a GL-4 gear oil would be our first required selection.
-Most gear oils on the shelf have a sulfur/phosphorous additive that puts them into Extreme Pressure (EP) GL-5.
-The problem is that some of those additives in GL-5 will erode the synchromesh (yellow metal) alignment gears eventually (unknown time) causing hard shifting in the transfer case.

I would stick with a GL-4 gear oil for a manual transmission with synchromesh then select a recommended viscosity.

Oh I don’t doubt that - just making sure others know that this is a perfectly reasonable option that seems be lower priced than other alternatives and seems to match the “official” fluid specs a little closer. There may have been some outdated information in this thread about it, so I wanted to update the thread on what I’ve found.

I personally wouldn’t be worried about any efficiency losses - but this is MUD after all - wouldn’t be MUD without hairsplitting. 🤣

I’m still fascinated by the switch from GL-5 spec to GL-4 myself. Interesting engineering changes.
