Well great. Just over a month ago I purchased 6 metal bottles of the unicorn tears transfer case fluid at $100 a bottle. Thanks, Toyota 😒
Watch these plastic bottles be contaminated like the plastic bottles of AHC fluid

As if the 4WD mechanism wasn’t finicky enough

When you post them in the classifieds for $400/ea, I promise not to make fun of you. Much.

I bought them to use, but now that you mention it....

Tried to buy Transfer case oil at the dealership today discovered the stuff in the can was discontinued. Found this thread while. At the parts counter he had none of the new stuff in stock (but could get it next day). He went back to the service guys and asked what they are using and came back with this:

Which is not the 00279-DGOLF-01 75W stuff referenced above in this thread. I think all this means is that the service guys just use what they have. I’ll either order the 00279-DGOLF-01 or just change to Ravenol or Redline or something.

Interesting, it's also the GL-5. Being that it says "for LSD" on there, it's certainly implying it has a limited slip additive in it. Also looks like it's ~$42 a quart.

If you are going to use the GL-5, I'd just get the Mobil Delvac 75W90 which is an excellent full-synthetic fluid, is 1/4 the cost of that Toyota fluid, and lacks a limited slip additive. I'm also curious if the AWD T-case in my GX470 (with the OEM-recommended GL-5 75W90) includes any brass components, of it it's just part time transfer cases that include those.

I believe the “old stuff” in the can was GL-4 but I don’t think it says GL-4 on the can. I also don’t see GL-5 on the new plastic bottle. Am I missing it somehow? If the spec isn’t on the bottle, how do we know what it is? I don’t understand the change to GL-5, and without knowing why they have changed, I’d lean to staying GL-4. I suspect that the change has more to do with what’s easier/cheaper for Toyota across their vehicles rather than what is best for my specific LC.

Apparently a lot of Tacoma guys have run it with no issues in their transfer case that calls for liquid gold. Fwiw, liqui moly now lists Toyota 08885-81081 specifically as a replacement recommendation.

From my BITOG research, this one comes the closest to the OEM fluid cSt viscosity @100C (5.7) at only 6. Redline and HPL sit at 6.3. Ravenol sits at 7.4.
Puttin’ my money where my mouth is. $10/bottle + shipping.

The telescoping pour tube actually worked pretty well. I should save the bottles for later use.

The new bottle clearly says GL-5 on it, See below. I can't comment specifically on GL-4 vs. GL-5 for the later model vehicles, only that my similar AWD Torsen/4x4 T-case from my older Toyota specs GL-5 75W90 for it. If you really want GL-4, I'd buy an aftermarket fluid (like the one shown above for $10/bottle).

If Toyota has discontinued the straight 75W gear oil and is now only selling multi-viscosity GL-5 gear oil now, IMO it would seemingly invalidate GL-4 being the required "spec" for that transfer case.

Googled that stuff and noticed my local NAPA can also get it for $10/bottle.

FYI, a Motive Power Fill makes the job even easier....I use mine for differential/TC-case and transmission fluids (with a decontamination between fluid types).

Good tip! I used a mity-vac hand vac pump for the diffs and that stuff is THICC - got a nice workout lol.

I thought about getting one of those pressurized pump fillers like that motive but was being cheap and was unsure if it could move thick gear oil - now that you’re confirmed, I’ll likely pick one up the next time I do diffs on any vehicle haha.

For the transmission refill, I’ve found it faster to just gravity feed with a tube fed from above in the engine bay straight into the fill hole.

It's pretty slow with the 85W140 that ECGS specifies for my aftermarket gears, but about 10X faster than manually squeezing. I pressurize it and let it do it's thing until it drips out the fill port.

I've done the trans that way too, in a cold shop. It took forever :). In a warm shop during the summer, it would have been much easier. Here is how I did the trans fluid last time. All from the cooler other than the final level check at the end (I usually over-fill so I don't have to add it in through the side of the trans).

Since then I've also splurged on the Motive power brake bleeder, which I should have bought years ago.

I meant this bottle doesn’t seem to say GL-5:

Got it. It's quite interesting that the bottle omits any kind of GL- label. Maybe it doesn't meet either spec? Every other bottle of gear oil I've seen has had GL-4 or GL-5 on it.

I find it interesting too, but then this stuff isn't being recommended for Hypoid gear sets, it's only supposed to be used in very specific applications within the toyota powertrain world. I can understand that meaning the GL rating isn't very important.
