Crap, I may have bought a bit too much thinking it was 75w85.

Well, if it makes anyone feel any better- I dumped my ~30k mile Ravenol out of my transfer case yesterday. Fluid actually looked really good. Not as clean as the Delvac 1 I dumped from the rear diff, but it was still a clear golden color.

Now to wait MANY weeks for the Blackstone report! :rolleyes:

Sure seems 30k is way too early to change fluids based on how good everything looked, but gives me piece of mind.
 
I mean what did the VOA say? The detergent level was markedly lower than Toyota or redline? So as long as you’re not doing a water crossing every weekend or running 100k intervals you should be fine. It’s probably our collective OCD taking hold.

I complete deep water crossings fairly often. My diff fluid usually shows signs or minor water contamination, yet my T-case never has (everything has extended breathers). The diffs have new seals as well, while the TC seals are 19 years old with 206K on them. I change diff fluid yearly (due to water crossings) and TC fluid every 3 years or so.

UOA for the Ravenol with ~30k miles on it in my transfer case- came back looking great. Still shocked at the lack of additives but what do I know!
As expected. I think that you all would see similar results if you went to a farm and home store and filled it with $6-quart 80W-90 GL4 sold next to the tractor and skid-steer hydraulic fluid. Toyota TCs do not seem picky on fluids.

Toyotas must have unicorn tears.
From the TORSEN (aka Turbo encabulator) manual entitled "Turbo Encabulator Diagnostic Procedures Manual and Song book"...

sufficient unicorn tears must be used or failures can occur in the following:
Panametric Fam
Lunar Wane Shaft
Drawn Reciprocation Dingle Arm

Of course, everybody knows the above is true for only the Lotus O Delta variant(s):slap: I mean seriously!:rofl:

I'm baselining my new-to-me 200 and part of that process is all new fluids. Looking up the specs, Toyota calls for "SAE 75W Toyota Genuine Transfer Gear LF" fluid. 1.53L, for the record.

My discount parts source is $53.63/Liter, MSRP at the counter is $81

What about this stuff is so special?

I went ahead and bought it from Toyota, knowing it'd be good for 60k miles, and not knowing what is different. Physically, it is a lot darker brown than any gear oil I've ever seen.. even the Toyota 75w-85 diff oil. That stuff is a light golden yellow.. I'm attaching a pic of the Transfer gear LF, brand new, in a clear container. It also smells much stronger than normal gear oil. Whatever that unique smell is.. this has a LOT of it.

Speculation: thinner for better mileage, and the needs of the transfer case not being particularly demanding.

People have discussed this in other threads, citing VOA, and saying it didn't look too advanced. I know it's difficult to find a straight 75 weight gear oil.. Amsoil doesn't even list a product for our rigs.

Any input?

Toyota units are designed for a specific viscosity oil, thinker or thinner viscosity oils are not a good choice and other makers of a 75W oil might not meet Toyota's viscosity requirement, and if used might result in shortened unit life. In all seriousness, even the $6-quart farm store gear lube is probably better TC lube most LC200s running around Africa and Central Asia are getting :). "Robust/heavy duty" and "picky on fluids" don't go together and Toyota knows that.

The analysis of the Ravenol sent in is proof positive that another 75W oil made by a very reputable lubricant company knows what they are doing and meets or exceeds the toyota requirement.

I don't get how people think that only Toyota can possibly come up with lubricants that will work with their vehicles when they don't even make the stupid lubricant themselves to begin with. The bases that go into them are made by a few select companies that everyone gets them from. After that, it is just additives that is also purchased from a select few suppliers. It is pure chemistry people...not magic. Along with the fact that there are several ways additive-wise to accomplish the exact same thing.

so Toyota juice is slightly less viscous (maybe for MPG?) and has a ton more additives...why does the ravenol have such little even compared to other aftermarket ones like redline?
 
I would like to see analysis of a 30K mile Toyota 75W sample for reference. Not that I think the Toyota stuff would be bad, but it would be cool for comparison. In the end, wear metals is all that matters.
