Drove the FJ40 in 100° temps to drop it off for the car show tomorrow. Makes me appreciate the ac and cooled seat option in the LC250 😆

Where is the car show?
It was in San Marino! Great turnout, but absolutely unbearable heat today. Got dropped off early and snapped a pic with the great grand parents before leaving.

Cooling down with the fan before a quick diaper change.

Trying to figure out why this thing overheated (according to the dash gauge) the other day. I was wracking my brain wondering if I put the thermostat in correctly, because that was one of the first things I ever changed.

Popped off the thermostat housing and it was installed correctly with the two gaskets. However, this is an aftermarket Aisin thermostat and many threads on here say to use oem only. I have an oem thermostat and gaskets enroute.

Ordered a camera off Amazon to peek inside the radiator and double check that it’s not clogged up. It looks good as new up top, but I think I will pop the lower hose off and check too.

A short while back I installed an aqua hub fan clutch that is supposed to be better than the oem fan clutch. After the install I didn’t hear any more air being pushed than before. Now that the upper radiator hose is off, I will be removing the fan clutch and adding a bottle of 10k cst fluid.

Lastly, I am going to open the block drain and see if it’s clogged. My guess is that the issue lies there, since I never looked into it while I had the motor apart…

Other things to note:

- I just pulled the radiator cap off and there was pressure even after a week of sitting.

- oil does not look like it is mixed with coolant

- coolant does not look like it is mixed with oil

- temp gauge needle rose higher after smog equipment was re-installed

- temp sender could be reading wrong on the gauge, but that wouldn’t explain the radiator pressure while cold.

- I’ve driven it 5 hours round trip without issue, and the heater worked.

- I could possibly have the timing too advanced…

Got a whole bunch of work done, but ran out of coolant and time. I’ll try and fire it up tomorrow…

Opened up the block drain and emptied everything out. Got the endoscope out and checked inside the bung to make sure there was no buildup inside.

Installed new oem thermostat & gaskets

And added a bottle of water wetter for safe measure

Ok, got the coolant filled up and bled. Idled for 20 min without issue. The temp on the cluster was just passed the middle. Even though it was a bit high it was still lower than the last time I drove it.

Pulled out my ignition light to double check timing and idle speed. All was good and my laser temp tool showed the radiator & hoses were at the appropriate temp.

I’m thinking the sensor on the head is no good, and I will get a new one ordered up next. Oh yea, the fan clutch mod worked great! Pushing lots of air through the rad…

Sounds like you are working thru it and taking the appropriate measures in troubleshooting. Did you see any air bubbles coming up after filling it up in the Spill Free Funnel after the engine was running?

You can always drop the thermostat in a pot of water that you are bringing to a boil. Use a high quality thermometer to check the water temp when you see it open. It should correspond with the temp of the thermostat.

You can also hook up a more accurate aftermarket temp guage to the sensor to see what the actual temp is. This obviously won’t work if the sensor is shot.

There were tons of air bubbles coming out since I totally drained the block. I jacked up the front, let it bleed, lowered it, let it bleed and repeated a few times. New oem temperature sender on the way as well as all of the window felt trims.

Decatur Toyota is having another 25% off website prices plus free ship sale. I always keep a sheet of part numbers I want to order when that sale pops up!

I need to replace the exact door parts on my ‘78. Would you mind posting up your part numbers? Thank you!
I hope GreenEFSI doesn't mind, but here is a very comprehensive parts list with costs from the common suppliers that I used to order rebuild parts for my 1980 doors. Do your own verification for your '78, but I think this should get you most of what you need. I ordered almost all of my parts through Impex and fortunately through luck, the parts arrived to me a day before the de minimis limit of $800 was eliminated as far as duties go and no tarrifs were in effect.

Here is the list of what I ordered from Decatur Toyota. Killer deal when they run the extra 25% off plus free shipping. Might have to wait for the next holiday for that to pop up…

You should consider doing a video of how to replace all these parts on your 40. I looked around on YT and didn't find much. The window runs are pretty straight forward, but I have no clue on how to replace the inner/outer weatherstrips.
