I've never heard of any 55 that has both options, just one or the other. We're going to have to look at this a little more.
There are some in Australia I saw pics of last night while researching... I searched manual tailgate and I think two Aussies had posted pics of theirs... The crank is shown dead above the rear handle, and the electric key insert is above and to the left of the handle as opposed to being below it...
Correct me if I'm wrong, and maybe your trying and I just can't see it.. grins...
but that's what the pics show...??? but wouldnt be the first time I've misinterpreted something..

Would be interesting to see the photos. I looked up an Australian 1977 with rear tailgate and there is only one model. The diagram looks just like the European and General Countries LHD ones. Still shows one or the other; at least the way I read the diagrams. Here are the part numbers for the regulator. The first number is the electrical motor regulator and the others are mechanical. I also cut and pasted the mechanical handle and it shows it only applying to the mechanical regulator - again, as far as I can tell. I have not looked at other years for RHD models.

69860REGULATOR ASSY, TAIL GATE
73110-903511
73150-90352MECHANICAL TYPE (11/1975 - 11/1976)1
73150-90353MECHANICAL TYPE (12/1976 - 12/1978)1
69860AHANDLE ASSY, TAIL GATE REGULATOR
73160-90351MECHANICAL TYPE (12/1971 - 11/1976)1
73160-90352MECHANICAL TYPE (12/1976 - 08/1977)1

I got off track w my thought..
It's a USA truck Originally electric tailgate... electric at some point quit, and a PO solved the issue via installing a window crank on the tailgate exterior...
Curious if anyone else has ever done this.. My thinking is the motor in the tailgate is most likely removed, or at the least the gear is caput or missing...
I'm curious to know if anyone has converted from electric to manual?

and I agree... they did not come w both.... doing an either/or here... curious to learn how it works... thinking about leaving it as it is as opposed to trying to reconvert to electric..

I would think the factory crank would have a lock system. Sometimes I wish mine was a crank model. Real bad when it won't roll up in a rain storm or the back is filled with camping stuff and it won't go down. (oh, a bad ground inside the tailgate! ).

I’m going to guess there is no way to lock it?
I was just wondering the same. On the same parts diagrams there is a key/lock assembly clearly shown for the electric window option and out beside it is another option with these part numbers. What I don't know is if that is for locking the manual window or if it's for the barn door option?

69054CYLINDER & KEY SET, BACK DOOR LOCK
69054-60010(12/1971 - 11/1976)
69054-90351(12/1976 - 08/1977)
69054-90352(09/1977 - 06/1980)

Seller advises the crank does not lock on this USA OEM electric converted to manual..
But my bet is if all the guts were OEM, and manual, yes it would lock.. The tailgate on the manuals do have a key, but located as said earlier in a different location than the electric tailgate location...
If interested in seeing one, search manual tailgate, about halfway down on the search result is an Aussie responding and the subject starts with a small x...FYI
And several of you are in the thread!!:)

I'm guessing you will have to choose between the two options. Just an educated guess knowing how the assembly works. If I was to convert to manual I would want to source all the OEM parts and install them accordingly. But that's just me.

I'm definitely an OEM guy... however, .... grins.
My red/white was going to be a trail rig... I OEM'ed it right into a starbucks/garage/VERY Light camping trails queen...
The plan is to chase the mechanicals, engine, brakes, fuel, etc on this one... but I'm pretty certain I am going to let this truck tell it's own story... Gotta get some OME springs under her, new tires, shocks, but the patina is gonna stay... and I'm thinking if the window works, why worry... On the other hand, if it looks/acts fragile, then yeah, the deep dive starts but not to keep the manual, it'll be to go back electric... It would be too problematic (tailgate lock assembly is in a different position on a manual, for example, and the crank itself is in a different position on the tailgate compared to this converted one... Going back electric will definitely happen if the crank ever fails... hoping the motor is still in it.. but I doubt it..

Truck delivered!!
Made the Montana-Florida trip unscathed... in about 40 hours... driving hard..
Good news, truck is as complete as I could hope...Floor mats look great... 3 of the four doors have those OEM aluminum scuffs...original TEQ AM radio ...all the gauges work.. horns work.... fired right up.... original Toyota radiator... new water pump by PO...both bumpers (bent but fixable)
Bad news.. that rear window crank is definitely EOL (end of life)_grins... typical front left floor pan and rear floor pan rust areas... but absolutely solid... frame looks great..
obvious short term needs:
Tires
Clutch master and slave with a line flush
Fuel filter
Clean carb

tailgate window will be down the line....
Super happy w it...
