Today I was not able to make it out to the shop to work on the 40. While I did not get to work on the 40 I did get to hang out with the wife and I think it was meant to be. We got the news that my wife was losing her job and is effective immediately. While these types of things happen they can be stressful depending on your situation in life. I tend to stay calm as I believe things work out and sometimes that tends to be hard but always rewarding. I always learn from these types of circumstances and come out better on the other end and I think a lot of that is due to our attitudes.

A few thoughts and things I learned from today. Skip down to the end to see what I am up too today for the 40!

We recently got back from Hawaii and they do what is called the "shaka". The story goes that a gentleman named Hamana Kalili, was working in the sugar mill and his hand got caught in a machine and he lost all but his pinky and thumb. While not a good situation, he continued to have a great attitude on life and would wave at folks with what he had. The shaka is now the official state hand gesture for Hawaii, bringing joy and happiness along with smiles to all who chose to use it in passing. We get a choice in life on which roads we take.... I am blessed with many things and this forum and the folks that are apart of it are just a few of them.

Hang in there with me... last thing and then I will get to the 40 stuff.

I got the news about my wifes job and then arrived back home with her to find 2 packages on my door step (from Marks Offroad) along with a Jan/Feb issue of Toyota Trails magazine. I was quickly reminded that while things do not always happen like we want, we still have simple joys in life like reading a magazine and getting to wrench on Land Cruisers and rebuilding old parts. My wife does a lot of work with the PTA for our kids schools and she does a lot with making sure our family is well taken care of along with many other things. I told her "it had to happen this way because you never quit anything, so look at it as a blessing so you can focus on the things you love and want to do without the stress of work".

I chose to look at it in a sense of the "movement' or group called "Slow Baja". Slow down and take it easy and enjoy what is around us. Lets put the "hurry up" down and enjoy the now.

Took the fuel pump off and rebuilding that along with cleaning up the 8274 winch for the 40. Waiting on a few more parts and will get everything put back on and she should be running smooth. I took some goof off to the paint job that was on it as I noticed the original red paint under it and am hoping to get the red with some patina possibly... more to come on that.

There are a lot of different terms used to describe your situation with your wife, and your attitude going forwards. All of them are good. And all of them are appropriate. 😊

My wife is currently relinquishing her driver’s license because of a vision problem that originally surfaced 8 years ago. She has the same positive attitude about moving forward in a new and different way as you just described.

It’s been touch and go getting things done lately. I have the exhaust manifold sitting in some evapo rust and then will hit it with paint tomorrow along with the intake.

Today @Copenhagen1 and myself got the non oem carb off and manifold/header off. He’s trying to keep me focused as I tend to do the whole… squirrel! thing. I am eager and always seeing things to do or that I’m curious about which makes it hard. Always appreciate the guys on here helping as well as folks like @Copenhagen1 who don’t mind teaching a young gun how it’s done.

We got the bib off and are going through the headlights and piles of parts that we can fit together to make complete sets that aren’t rusted out. They will be reassembled with new H4 city racer lights.

Looking forward to slapping on the @65swb45 carb/brakebooster/master cylinder and so forth.

Mark, if you see something I might be needing let me know!

Below are the old photos of the old carb as we are taking it off.

You aiming for Round Up?
I’ll be there! Was doing some light reading at 11pm last night while I watched an episode of the Slow Baja podcast. Look what I came across!

Favorite quote so far out of this issue was, and I paraphrase “Bad weather isn’t a setback. It’s texture. It’s what you remember. - Jason Scoggins

Right on, best of luck and god speed sir.
I won’t be able to make it but perhaps we’ll see each other at one of the local meet ups.

Spent some time last night gathering bolts and installing a few things… water pump, thermostat and manifolds.

Looks like @Copenhagen1 is about to get western like Gary P. Nunn says.

Once we get this wrapped up I aim to get the front axle done with my buddy down the road with the disc brakes from Mark.

Should have the carb in and brake booster/master from Mark in soon. Then it’s off to Roundup hopefully! 🤞🏻

Clay, the gaskets between the intake and exhaust look way too thick for the ears of the manifold to line up with the studs on the head. Did you test fit that?

Interesting Rube Goldberg you had there getting the stock accel cable to hook up to the Chicom carb. If you can bend back the wires behind the barrel stop without any kinks or fraying, you can reuse it. Also, the insulator under that carb is the stock one, but those gaskets are too thick to fit it under a stock air cleaner, which we talked about.

That’s all I have for now.

Mark, thanks for the input and advice. I’ll be calling you as we assemble as I’m sure I’ll be needing a few things potentially.

Everything seemed to go on ok.. for now lol.

Are those nyloc type nuts on the manifold, must be special to handle the heat.

I do not think they are specific, although it should be fine as the nuts will still hold? If not, I’ll look into more.

It’s getting there… I dream of dirt roads and riding in the 40 on our place in central Texas, along with the other guys and their 3 40s on our place.

Was able to get it over to my other buddies place here in town to get a few things done. He pulled the body off and is getting the tub cleaned and sprayed with epoxy. He’s helping me epoxy the frame also and getting the 2.5 lift installed.

While he’s doing that I was able to help get the new axle (late model with disc brakes) cleaned up and taken apart to get cleaned and painted. Installing the new rotors, calipers and all the good stuff that I got from Mark.

Going to need a rear sill… the wood that was on it works for now (PO) but not the solution for me.

While in Vegas for Conexpo, I stopped by BTB to see the shop and they gave me a tour. I ended up getting a box of 555 tie rods since I was there and needed some. Can’t wait to get it all put back together, truly blessed to have some great folks helping me out on this 40. Couldn’t do it without them…

How much did they charge for shipping?
I never checked to be honest. Since I was there I looked down at a 40 they had and was reminded of my tie rod ends. Grabbed them and threw them in the luggage and felt like the trip was a success since I got to see a cruiser yard and shop. If I can’t work on mine, might as well go see a shop where someone is working on a someone else’s 😎.

Does anyone happen to have an air cleaner for a 1970 by chance? I have the oil bath one for earlier models and need to get rid of that one and get the correct one for my 40. Not sure if anyone would possibly want to trade or something (don’t want to spend a fortune). If someone was making it to Lone Star Land Cruiser Roundup with one, might cut down on the shipping?

I’m willing buy and have it shipped just not sure it’s cost effective. Let me know either way as I’ll need one.

Chassis went back on.
