Exhaust system pics in the quote below using LCE 3RZ swap headers on a 3rd gen pick up. This unit passed CA BAR smog referee inspection.

Some notes for success:
Ref wants to see catalyic convereter in the original spot. Their standard is the inlet flange being +/-3" of OEM distance on the donor vehicle.
O2 sensors must be in original location (distance) from cat flanges AND must have correct angle orientation as donor vehicle.
After the post cat O2 sensor, you can run it how you like.
Did you have to deal with the two cat exhaust system to get through CA BAR
Maybe we could get together and i could pick your brains, I am part way through the conversion, just put the engine in

Those pics were a friends.

I am still trying to get mine to clear the EVAP monitor. The ref will have you send pictures showing all 8 monitors complete along with pictures of the engine, intake, exhaust... I am in that phase.

Either case, both of our donor engines are pre 2000 trucks. I believe his in the pics is from a '99 and mine is '98. They were single cat pre-2000 and dual cat 2000-2004. The ref wants your exhaust to match your donor vehicle. From what recall, the second cat on 2000-2004 vehicles is about right where the gas tank starts on our recipient trucks, so it's a hell of a time getting the exhaust packaged. @liveoak probably is your best bet to pick, as his original post says he used a 2001.

Has anyone used the Chilkat crossover exhaust? I haven’t been able to find much on it on the internet but it looks like it may work for those of us not required to do any type of smog check. I’m thinking of trying it to make the trip to the exhaust shop cheaper.

I used this kit, it's currently about the same price as the crossover pipe you linked and with the addition of a muffler I had in my stash it was enough to do the whole exhaust system. I did buy one additional 22° bend to get the dump behind the wheel to land exactly how I wanted it. Pics of the finished product in my build thread.

i agree with this or something similar.
pretty simple and bends are like $20 through summit.
chillkat parts are hit and miss

I’ll have to look more into it. I had glanced through Summits website and it was close to $600 for all the parts since I need a whole new exhaust system. I’d love to route mine under the transmission and not at the transfer case as I’m hoping to do duals in the future and don’t want to have to modify it again.

these are the ones i used on the 85, with MF muff. i did something similar using Speedway parts on my 89 5v crossover.
i get summit next day most times.

Hadn't seen this thread... saved. I'm kinda 80% through a 1999 3rz swap w/W56 into my 83. I got the engine pieces in a box, rebuilt it a few years ago and installed, then life got in the way (and a Landcruiser) so I still need to get back to the project and wrap it up. I'll refer back here then. BTW I have a full Toyota 1999 factory service manual for the engine & wiring if anyone needs reference info on it.

Air filter box
If you're going to move the battery to the other side, you'll have room for a stock air box. Some people leave the battery and just use an open cone filter which I don't like because it's right above the exhaust manifold (hot air) and doesn't protect from water intrusion.
The 3rz air filter box is too tall for the older trucks. I cut the bottom out of a T-100 box and fiberglassed it to fit.
The best solution is an airbox out of certain 99-2004 3.4 tacomas that can be identified because the filter loads from the top like toast in a toaster and has a flap you lift to insert it. An aftermarket one only costs around $70 new.
Chris, can you show a pic of the air box. I might be moving on mine and this is one unresolved issue.

@pappy,

I believe this is the one he is talking about. I ordered it from RockAuto. It was Dorman 258-504

Is this the V6/3.4L box, or the T100?
3.4 box from an 04 Tacoma. My apologies if you’re talking about the T100 box.

Both are options. Chris said he used a shortened T100 box, and I wanted to see what it looked like. There is a 3.4 at the boneyard I was about to go look at.

I have a 3.4 airbox from a 99 4runner, easy fit in the early pickup, drilled a 3" hole in the inner fender. The early 95-97 4Runners (and maybe T100) used a larger Mass airflow sensor that is like $600 (last time I checked), and the later MAF is something like $70 from Toyota. The photos Mudder posted is showing the hole for the later (smaller) MAF which is what you want. I rewired the MAS for the 2.7 ECU.
