37" tires fit stock fzj80

Now that we know they will fit in the driveway...

To get it drivable one will need approx 2.5" of bump stops exstension clear the fender or cutting is required. Being that a stock 80 has only 3" of uptravel in the front, there is the problem. I cut 2" out of my fenders took out my front coils. This is what it looked like on the stock bumps plus a 1" body lift.

I went about it differently than most. 3" body lift, some trimming. Tires are 37.5" x 14.5", give or take, on stock wheels. Those tires were not fitting at stock height (I tried :)). A 12.5" wide tire would fit much better, and that is the way I will go once these are worn out.

To get it drivable one will need approx 2.5" of bump stops exstension clear the fender or cutting is required. Being that a stock 80 has only 1.5" of bump stop gap on the front there is the problem. I cut 2" out of my fenders took out my front coils. This is what it looked like on the stock bumps plus a 1" body lift.

Thank you for such an informative post! Just so I understand, you are saying I could extend the bumpstops 2.5" or get a 1" body lift, or do some cutting? This would be the bare minimum needed to practically drive the vehicle, right?

My plan was to upgrade springs/shocks for 2.5-3" of lift to clear the tires. I appreciate you letting me know my options for keeping the center of gravity low as possible. That is my first priority after ground clearance.

What was your reason to go with a body lift versus suspension if you don't mind me asking?

There is will it fit, and will it fit, and will it fit. You original post was asking if the tires fit, but only to the scope of having a rolling rig until you could install your suspension. Then there is the will it fit well enough to drive or wheel. If you don't mind some rubbing, or some cutting, or lifting, or... you have MANY options. If you want your tires to fit without rubbing, and without lowering your bumpstops, Slee says you need 4" of lift to run 35" tires.

Many others have run larger tires on less lift, but they modified more than just the lift springs, or accepted more rubbing than Slee accepted. Which is not to say that adding a body lift, or dropping bumpstops, changing wheel offset, or adding shock limiting straps is bad. It's just that it became, "What are the ways to fit 37" tires?" Which is a question with a LOT of answers.

I've read enough on this forum of all the trials and tribulations concerning suspension lifts, handling issues, caster correction, etc. To do it "right" is not an inexpensive proposition. Even at that, the geometry of the rear suspension goes out of whack with a little lift. Not terribly noticeable under normal conditions perhaps, but shows its ugly head in an emergency handling situation. There are enough FJ80s on this forum that have been totaled by rollover due to the rear end snapping out on them (sudden oversteer).

So leaving the suspension alone avoids any of that. The body lift was far less expensive. The trimming that was required is detailed in the link in my signature, but it isn't noticeable unless I point it out to you.

I also raised the engine 3" and transmission 2" to get them up out of harms way. Still need to build front and rear bumpers, hopefully this summer. The steps/sliders were far easier to make thanks to the body lift.

By using the stock wheels, even with the 14" wide tires, I have no bumpsteer, no kickback in the wheel. I've had no issue turning the wheel offroad.

I'm happy with my choice :)

Hello, just wanted to point out that 37s, 37/12.5/17 does fit standing still looks perfect but once you starts to drive and turn it rub very badly on fender wells and i have 2-3 lift on lc. I have to switch back to 285/75/16 which is 33s because of this issues I'm having with 37.

Very nice! Most people start making a lot of cuts in their inner fender wells for the 37's and 40's when they don't want to lift it further, don't they?

My big dream is fitting 40's (lots of clearance) and as close to stock height as I can get.

They are called 8 hole wheel found on FJC & 4runners around 2011 to like 2013. I really liked the look but wanted to get out of the wheel spacers. I do have them for sale if anyone has intrest PM me.

Thank you for including the note on spacers. Didn't realize they needed them. Love the look of those wheels !!

I sure do like the look also, just didn't want wheels spacers... towing a big trailer & all, just one less worry.
