Went for a cruiser and had to break hard at light the result one rear brake line wasn’t tight enough and lost my breaks …. I was only 15Km from home doing small road test … it’s repair now and bleeded.

Other then that no leaks and overheating

Do you guys experience lack of power climbing good hills? Like 2th gear to 3rd gear max speed would be 50KM foot to the floor?

My 79 is probably a lot lighter than your 78, but big hills were usually possible in 4th and sometimes 3rd.
I only ever had to gear down to 2nd when I was towing a BJ42 behind on a flat deck.

I wasn’t on a roll meaning that there’s a stop at the bottom so shifting from 1 to 3 very slowly lol no way I would be towing… but max speed 50km.. it’s been to long since I drove it so I have nothing to compare it with

This is a bit tough for your average 1HZ owner to quantify for a comparison as we do not know the size or grade of the hill, but on average saying your 1HZ cruiser is slow and everyone that owns a 1HZ cruiser will simply nod sagely in agreement with you.

That said, yes, it is normal. Sigh. 🫤

It will get you there, and back again with whatever you throw at it... just slowly. This is why some of us have elected to Turbo the 1HZ for north American driving. It will undoubtedly shorten the life of an indirect injection motor, but sensible drivers can still get a lot of miles out of one setup correctly.

I guess I am just a bit too cautious, I know some 12 wheelers are struggling during the climb..

With that being said II drive slowly with IMUA because I really feel in a other dimension driving this cruiser , the diesel engine, the sounds it feel great 😌

I am gonna give him a turbo and fresh internal but for this season I am going to drive him like that

I am pretty sure this was by design by toyota so that more people can appreciate the lines of these 70 series as we slowly go by... or as people walk past admiring the Land Cruiser as they beat us to the top of a hill. 🤷‍♂️

Gotcha, yeah that sounds like what I would expect from starting at a standstill at the base of a hill with a 1HZ. I found similar limits when driving in steep / hilly areas. When towing last summer I actually had to put the transfer case into 4L in order to get up the hill when starting out from a STOP sign since the motor kept stalled in 1st gear and I didn't want to burn out the clutch.

I’ve owned multiple 1HZ powered Land Cruisers that were turbocharged (with success) but I would not recommend adding a turbo without also adding an Intercooler. 😊

This reassurance is welcome 🤗

Really because of the overheating?
Yes sir. My shop installed an A/W setup which resulted in a significant difference in EGT’s.

There’s lot of people saying it not needed and a lot of people saying it’s a must … got the Sas pod acquired but still miles away from my engine build time to think ahead

I went and picked up this baby today along with 6 rebuilds injectors . I also swap the compensator to the turbo one for the pump

The guy at the shop was super nice and gave me a few tip to improve IMUA curent situation by testing the the pump

The barn doors almost completed just need to work the wood trays now and still missing some wire for the OGS bags on the small doors

Did give the fuel pump one full rotation on the HP side look like it’s improved tonight will try the same hill 😄
