First Move!

Got the throttle cable and brake pedal adjusted, so we decided to put on the rear drive shaft and take her for a couple of short drives. Got some whine from the transmission on the first drive, which made sense. Topped off the fluid and that went away.

This was also a perfect opportunity to actuate the ABS a few times thanks to the snowy driveway, so one more brake bleed and the brakes should be good to go.

Cooling system flushed and filled with Toyota Red.

First bottle of green is what came out of the heater core. I sent one gallon of distilled water into the heater core and caught what came out the other side.

The rest of the bottles are the initial fill and subsequent drain/refills to dilute out the rust.

Now she should be good to go for a good long while.

has anyone seen Trailer Park Boys?

Excellent. I’ll be trailering mine to him at the end of March. Looking to be done end of April or early May.

Are you keeping the original color?

Changing it from black to 6M1. Can’t wait.

Still deciding if I drive it down, have it shipped, or a combination of both.

Wow, really! I love 202 on cruisers so much I contemplated changing my 6M1 to 202. At the end of the day she will look gorgeous no matter the color. I’m excited to see the transformation.

Side quest: rear quarter windows

Went to change the rubbers on the rear quarters and found that the frame on the first one I tore into is not only corroded, but it is also broken. Now waiting on delivery of new frames.

Ouch! Where did you source your new frames? Surprised you’re doing this now, being as how you’re scheduled for a windows out paint job ina few months. Was it leaking?

I already had the windows out before I decided that the long journey for the paint job was the way to go. Originally, I thought I was going to get the paint and body done locally, but it turns out that’s not really an option in general, let alone finding someone knowledgeable in Land Cruisers.

So to start driving it around to put the break-in miles on the engine, I need to re-install the windows. I figured it might be easier to use the new rubber I already had on hand given that it is more pliable, which is when I discovered the window frame corrosion.

So I just ordered new frames from the place I order most other parts (I use Marietta Toyota). Also got the center vertical support pieces since they have a fuzzy-coated rubber seal (replacing as much rubber as possible). When done, the glass and latches on the glass will be the only original parts - essentially new quarter window assemblies.

At first I thought that I would just put them back as-is, but I’m glad I didn’t and discovered the bad frames now since they are something I can address myself rather than having Kelly have to deal with it. Not they can’t, but why add the extra work for them for something I can do. Now, they will take them out for paint and put them right back in when done and we’ll all know they are good to go.

Makes all the sense in the world. I knew there was more context I didn’t quite understand. Not that I needed to! It’s going to be very well sorted by the time you’re done. I’ll be dropping off my Cruiser to Kelly on 27 March. Like you, I had a very difficult time finding local talent willing to take my money, let alone anyone who knew Cruisers. I’m glad to be making the long trip.

Yeah, after sharing some picture and some back-and-forth conversation it was not a difficult decision to lay down a deposit.
