Hello
Just bought a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser and love it but there is a Whistle Sound Between 28-40 MPH. Can not tell if it is sunroof, drive train or something else. But it sounds like the sound of a whistle when a window is slightly cracked open. It is reproducible every time.

'85? In the FZJ80 forum? Wait...sunroof? Are you sure this is an '85 truck or could you have meant a '95? If actually '85, maybe post in the 60 series forum for more responses. Is the sound changed by manipulating the throttle at speed? If so, check for carb to intake manifold vacuum leak. If you have a '95 then my advice obvioulsy does not apply.

I'm sure it's a 95.. anyway does it only occur at high RPM's before the transmission changes gear? If so it's normal, something to do with the factory exhaust on these vehicles

Like ExpoGeorgia has mentioned, there is a very common whistle from the exhaust on these trucks. In that 28-40mph range try and shift to a lower gear and see if it goes away. That would mean it is the exhaust and not a window/sunroof/etc. Nice to see someone else from Sandpoint on here. I grew up there first 22 years of life lol, it is heaven on earth for sure.

Hi folks...Opps yes I am an idiot I meant 1995. Sandpoint is great for sure...tons of snow last year and this year which is one reason I bought this truck. I will go out and test shifting down.

Try cracking each window one at a time and see what happens. I have a terrible whistle in my front PS window if my vent button is allowing outside air in, and I'm going 30+ MPH. If I crack the PS window a tiny amount (still can't even see the top of the glass), it goes away.
It took me 2 years to find that fix, which happened on accident.
Good luck.

^ I had this problem until I replaced the channel runs on the front doors. Now it's as quiet as when it was new.

Many 80s have a bit of an exhaust whistle. Some have had improvement by cutting off the resonator, but some have not.

Haha yeah I remember as a kid shoveling the sidewalk between the house and the garage and the snow berms would be taller than I was. Well enjoy the 80! Take some good pics!

Recently had the same issue come up, just before shift-point. Longtime Cruiser mechanic tells me it's the cats, common issue, not a problem.

If I use the sunroof tilt function and then close it again, I'll get a slight whistle at speed. If I then slightly open and close the sunroof the noise goes away.

Yep snow everywhere and it is doing great in the snow. Downshifting did not effect sound at all (I suppose that is a good thing). I tried the open passenger window slightly trick and it did reduce volume. It does seem like it could be the passenger window but in this case the passenger window was not effected by vent positions. Also hard to tell given everything is half frozen but passenger window looks like it has some very slight condensation going on along base of window (drivers side is bone dry) not sure if that could be related to sound.

That one beautiful truck!

Is you 80 Series from Oakland?

Oh man poor Mark III Supra's they are the stepchild of the Toyota world. When they went to show off, they were in the wrong lane, ran the stop sign, swerved erratically. I have seen Mark III Supras in some of the worst possible condition still being driven around. lol.

I have a whistle sound that occurs at similar speeds. I have gone from looking into the windshield, to the passenger window, to outside mirror - hard to tell for sure, but doesn't seem to be any of these. My latest test is that changing the HVAC fan speed seems to alter the sound and even make it go away in some cases. Might try that.
