Yeah there was a small groove. I’ve tried 3 different seals, I’ll see how this one does.
I also tried with a speedi-sleeve and that did OK but still eventually leaked.

The main problem is the 3b h55f input shaft is NLA. So try a crank repair shop to fix or find low mileage input shaft without a groove. Besides that, the tranny shifts really good.
Yeah ok, I was not sure if you were aware of the speedi-sleeves. I only used one once on one of my BJ40's, and it seemed to work well with the pinion, but I have never had anyone ever say they worked for very long on a transmission. Hopefully as you said, you can find a good used one.

Otherwise, you may need to upgrade the transmission at some point! :) Slap a 6-speed in there or something!

Hard at work knocking out big ticket items :D

Warn sent me some decals for the 8274. Even though they are for the newer version, they look pretty good on there. Lots of extra stickers they sent as well. Good on Warn!

Also with the weather getting nicer, I think it’s time to put that softtop on. We will see how much time I get this weekend, but it’s a priority…for me anyways

So took a trip to an upholstery shop to look into repairing the Velcro pieces that ripped ina huge wind storm last year. 82 degrees, just a fantastic little lunch drive.

First up: car play. The most technologically advanced thing in the cruiser. I’m sure Siri is collecting my GPS data as “mobility scooter on public highway - rerouting”

I use Waze on CarPlay and it works pretty good so far. Big plus is that Waze has a built in speedometer and reported police location, you know in case I’m speeding…in a 35mph zone. ;) Lots of options in Waze I haven’t messed with yet.

right by the upholstery shop is this little dealer/repair shop.

Unironically (is that a word?) they had a few land rovers parked in front of the building at the bottom of the parking lot hill. I assumed to keep the oil in the valley at the bottom of the hill rather than making the Valdez slip-n-slide. However I would a parked on top of the hill so when they don’t start you can roll them into the ship easier.

Upholsterer is out a couple weeks but quoted $200 to fix and reinforce the Velcro straps. I may see if our old sewing machine will handle it and do it myself.

I’d like to think I’m growing and maturing as a 70 series owner. (Not as a man, at least according to my wife)

Not once this trip did I bust out my terrible aussie accent, nor did I respond “Mick Dundee” as my name at Chic-Fil-A. I didn’t say Good Arvo or say cheers mate.

Typical onlookers, gawkers, double takes and points of the "wrong side" Didn't even use my Dad-joke repsonse "no, it's the "right" side, yeah! get it? right because the steering wheel?....

I will say someone pulled up and asked where I was from:

Here?

Dude: where did you get that car from?

Me: Australia (not “straya ya c@nt!)...(and who says "car" at a Land Cruiser...I mean, 4by? Rig? At least it wasn't Jeep)

Hit the drive through, notice “zoom meeting” on the stereo, lol. Yeah I was “in a meeting”. To be fair, it was more of a webinar that I didn’t really need to be in. Work trip yo. Expense report

This chic-fil-a was much more interested in talking denver nuggets (nuggets hat on) than even acknowledging the Land Cruiser.

Mildly offended. Nearly relapsed into ordering Vegemite or the spicy deluxe with beetroot.

All in all it was successful. A leisurely drive in the cruiser in 80 degree weather. Getting ready to head out again to pick up my son from track practice. Spot on decision to put the soft top on.

Thank you, just the update I needed. Technology, food, cruisers, taking the piss out of aussies... but leave those chic-fil-a workers alone. They are focused and efficient. And the lines are ridiculous. Who remembers when Chic-fil-a only existed in malls?

I was browsing BAT as I’m wont to do sometimes and saw an HZJ73 that didn’t sell but the seller posted a link from 2020 about a Dakar HZJ73.

It’s not in English, so if you are an uncultured swine such as myself you can translate the page :)

Great little article and what a nice modified HZJ73.

I found this pretty cool how they put the vents on the side of the hood buldge. The intercooler is up front so the scoop is just engine cooling along with the vents. The front valance is interesting as well. I wish there were more under hood pictures.

The suspension has a bunch of cool photos on the webpage. Coil overs, cool stuff.

I remember seeing this on BAT... did not realize it did not sell. I always wondered what that thing is that is poking out of the roof. Anyone know? Camera? Strobe? Maybe something required by all vehicles in the race?

Some pretty heavy mods on this unit, I wonder if that had anything to do with it not selling? IE: LC OEM enthusiasts/collectors

Oh this one wasn’t for sale, it was just a link the the seller put up on his. His sale just ended.

My valance under the wipers has always been primer. No idea why other than when the original windshield was replaced maybe they primed it then?

There is an auto paint store here and they can mix paint and put it in a can for you. I brought in the gas door and the scanned it for me to try and match. I know it’s 045 white, but it’s also 35 year old 045. The closest color
They matched too was Mercedes arctic white :hmm: it’s pretty close. It looks a little too white compared to the non-cleaned areas.

Theyn did a meguiars cleaning product, man my paint is dirty! Hopefully I’ll do some cleaning/clay bar wax this spring.

It’s not perfect, but it’s better than primer gray.

The rear passenger corner also had some primer. Pretty positive someone backed into something at some point. Add it to the list of body work needing done at some point. I did a quick spot shoot as wheel but need to use something to remove the primer overspray that’s been there. It looks a little funky but will blend better when I clean that up. Again better than primer.

Of course poser shot.

Apparently a fact that holds true for most of our rigs: They look so iconic and great from a distance, but if you come close, you see the wear, the use and sometimes even the abuse..
But, honestly, when I look at an old prime restored offroad vehicle, with shiny bodywork, it appears somewhat odd to me.
It looks unrealistic and staged to me.
So, I rather take a step back and look at our rigs from a bit of a distance.
(And, of course, great photographer skills make all the difference 👌)
Cheers Ralf

Great points and some of the reason I haven’t really gone into much bodywork. My rig always looks good from a distance lol 😂

This BJ74 was used and loved in Australia and most of the paint is original. A lot of close up pictures would show a lot of flaws and a couple unfinished bodywork spots.

The cool graphics, paint and all that is only original once. Now at some point I’m going to have take a few of those little rust spots/body issues and clean them up to preserve the body which is in pretty dang good shape, but that’s a big project

My daughters boyfriends truck broke down last night. We attempted to get it to town for a code read as it was low power/flashing cel (03 Chevy 61k miles) and and it gave up. Pretty positive it’s fuel pump/fpr issues.

BJ74 to the rescue. We were only about 4 miles from our house. I kept it to about 35mph max. Piece of cake.

If I wanted to tow like everyone else I see around here, I would have grabbed a log chain, shut off all the lights, hit 65mph and drive down the busiest highway I could find :)

Of course @PabloCruise remembers holding on for dear life when I towed my HJ45 home back in the day. We looked like proper bogans in this photo.

Maybe you're just not Weld County enough!

Also, great work incorporating "bogan" into a sentence. What a fantastic word that one is.

It is always a rewarding experience when a Land Cruiser is called upon to save the day. I *AM* a little surprised he was ok with you taking photos to commemorate and immortalize the shame. Probably that "fear of the imposing girlfriends dad" factor kept him most humbly silent. 😜

That usually is the case when the first time they meet you and you are cleaning all your guns on the dining room table...

Or, I could be completely wrong and he was just grateful for the assistance. But the above description is WAY more entertaining. lol

Way to go dad, you are still your daughters hero.

He’s a good kid, but he didn’t have a choice, that photo was coming and my daughter laughed. He also mumbled Toyota is looking better everyday :D

He’s graduating in June from Wyotech to be a diesel mechanic.

Pretty sure it’s a fuel pump or FP regulator. His parents are taking to a mechanic in town since they are from out of state. I did a little troubleshooting but let him borrow my TDI to get back to school an hour away.

I’ve got lots of little projects to finish up on the Land Cruiser before summer, so now I have an apprentice whether he likes it or not 😂

Love it... 👌

I have a while to wait before I can put the fear of God into a young man's life as my only daughter is 6. However, I shamelessly put my 3 boys to work any chance I get, to both teach them how to do things, but also to try to make my life a little less hectic.

This was yesterday, picking up the rest of the log house package with my crane truck:
20230423_150342[1].webp

Though I put them to work from time to time, I still let em be boys. I am not so old that I cannot remember being young. Though it is seemingly getting harder, lol.
