Battery tested...bad. Replaced it with the “alternate” size battery according to Autozone. The OE spec one was 12 3/4” long and doesn’t fit in the battery tray. The battery tray is one from Toyota, but for which vehicle I’m not sure.

Anyway, she cranked up with a little choke and some pumps of the pedal! Drove it with my dad to the gas station and back. He gave me shifting advice the whole way! :)

I am glad to see you got her home!! I will continue to follow along!

Happy Trails!

We have non Ethanol in Sedona,
My ‘78 really runs nice on it as well. Glad to hear the little beast is back in action👍

Welcome to the club! I'm Fort Walton Beach and new to the site as well. I've owned my FJ40 for about 6 months now and enjoying learning the ins and outs. We should keep the thread going for the guys local in the area.

So what's the story on this one - any updates @FloridaPhillip?

Hi @yotadude520, thanks for the friendly reminder!

I’m still in the enjoying to drive phase with my 40. Haven’t done anything but some regular maintenance. Starting to go out a *little* farther with her now. My wife has been pushing me to work on the fold and tumble seat so the whole family can ride farther than the neighborhood , so thanks to @justbecause for the link.

I’m also realizing the wooden board between the seats does not pass as a cup holder...will probably get a center console too.

Lastly, I want to put some rust converter/encapsulater on some of the bad spots. Just to keep it from further expansion. Definitely not going to attack actually fixing it near term...

Quick update: I changed the oil in the engine, transfer case, and differentials.

Some metal shards in the transfer case...not too bad though. I will watch it. I did spill about as much GL-4 as I put in the transfer case...so I went and got a pump from autozone and it went much better. My garage floor will be protected against corrosion for a while :)

The bolts on the front differential were slightly rounded, so I replaced with cheap-o ones from autozone. These bolts aren’t flush, so no major off road action until I can replace them. I will get some new ones for the next time I change it. Looked on SOR, but couldn’t find an exact replacement. Any recommendations? Is there anything wrong with going with the 10mm hex head ones?

Next, some rust mitigation. Starting low key with black Eastman converter. I think about those rusty quarters every day though...Has anyone tried to replace rear quarters without taking the tub off the frame?

Had to park the FJ40 outside because of a strong gas smell...it doesn’t go away after sitting. When I peak under the 40 directly under the gas tank, it looks like it has a layer of funk on it. Appears like something leaked in the past or maybe is still leaking. Pulling the tank seems like a big step to check something like this., any quick hitters I should do first?

I also have a random hose with a filter on it tucked under the rear quarter. The PO told me about it, but I remember him saying that it had been installed by a P2O.

Hose with filter:

Could it be vent for the gas tank?

It could be — but it seems to be originating from direction of gas door/filler and not the actual tank

I’m planning to put in some Icon jump seats! They don’t have a ship date yet, so could be a while.
I’m thinking I will need to address this rust where the seat bolts in on the bottom. There is a doubler underneath that probably caught water. I’m guessing it’s a common rust location. I will be perusing other build threads for ideas on how it was dealt with.
Should be an interesting first cancer repair project for me.

I found this video helpful when I started fixing paint defects prior to my vinyl wrap. On severely pitted areas I used POR15 on the bare metal then followed this guy's method.

Icon seats are in, and I am starting to paint them black with Rustoleum semi-gloss spray paint.

I ordered black seat covers & seat cover screws from @Cruiser Corps ...and a bunch of 15% off bolt kits and other goodies. I couldn't help myself! Those should be coming in this next week.

We have had customers use our seat covers on the Icon seats with good success. We do sell a pair of seat frames as well but they are actually a bit more expensive due to the way we designed them to match OEM style.
