You can study that difference for yourself here, in a link JohnnyC provided in FJFJFJ's retro battery thread, which providentially depicts both a 1961 and a 1962 for comparison: http://www.serie4.fr/articles/pdf/20100309104700.pdf

Thanks for the link, but I already knew the difference in the early bumpers ;)

I was just saying that the the general population at large would have no idea that there was a difference

Yea, the front bumper will just have to stay I'm afraid. Am flat out of money on this project. Used what $$$ I had available and have set aside a bit more for the details. Am happy to see this project got from one side of the river to the other without stalling in the middle. lol.

lol...I get what you are saying, and to be fair it looks awesome just as it is...I have no idea why I even mentioned it!

I REALLY appreciate that you mentioned it and appreciate when anybody on MUD mentions stuff as I am a total rookie as it pertains to the 1962 and older cruisers. I have learned a little more of course over this year that's for sure. lol.

The Four Wheeler article pictures both a 1961 and a 1962 FJ40. The 1961 has the earlier (FJ25) curved-end front bumper, the 1962 does not.

So I still don't understand, "My Wife Said." What makes FJFJFJ's front bumper incorrect?

The way I understand it, and I could be wrong, is that the earlier '62's with the earlier doors like this one, would have had the earlier front bumpers.

I believe I have seen other '62s with the early front bumper, but don't ask me to show you any pics, as I do not save every pic.

Toyota did not really end one year model off to another very cleanly in the earlier years...as many "left over" parts carried over for a few years yet (I have the older smaller tail lights on my early '64) ...guess this is all part of the novelty of having an early cruiser...and trying to figure out what is, and or is not correct

PS...don't use just that 4wheeler article to base what is correct or not...I just took a quick look, and I have a lot of pics of other '62s with the front bumpers with the curved ends, and some without the curved ends...some directly from Toyota lit also.

If you want a good laugh...go look at some of the older Toyota TV commercials you can still find on you tube...these are Toyota commercials, yet some have the bezels upside down...

Some info is just acquired from hours of reading and looking things up...learning here from people like Living In The Past who really knows these old trucks, and all the great historical info Johnnyc pulls out from god knows where, and by seeing what others have, we try to put all the info together to see what did, and what did not come from the factory for each year ...

Maybe it is...maybe it isn't. Problem is, that Toyota is no help in helping us find out what was original, and what wasn't. Many have even criticized the old Land Cruiser Toyota has in it's own museum, as having been restored with parts not correct to it's model year...I have never seen it in person, so maybe I should not have even made this comment...

Someone should get in touch with the owner of this '62 in Mexico to see what the vin number was.

Second picture is the cover of the 1962 brochure...someone should contact Toyota to see if this is correct.

And we should see who took this last picture for this July '62 article...that bumper looks curved to me, but what do I know...I'm getting old...

Sorry Dave...did not mean to side track this thread

Bumper is pretty easy to figure out. Earlier style has a top and bottom mounting brackets that bolted on. Later has a bracket riveted to the side of the frame and not one bolted to the bottom.

Thanks for this info LITP!

There you go Dave...now you know what to check for!

bumper.

I will post a pic of the bumper that came on the cruiser when I bought it. I have it in the garage. Here is a pic with the bumper on the cruiser.

My bumper,,,,,,top view

So, in my opinion, based on what I know of this cruiser's history ( and I could be wrong ) the front bumper came with the cruiser brand new in 1962. The next three pics are of the top of the bumper. Does this look like a period correct 1962 bumper to you guys?

FWIW my 62 also has the older doors and the "new" bumper. My VIN is lower then fjfjfj's. Of course it could have been replaced.

My hardtop '62 does, too. And my FST 62 seems to have come with single-sided turn signals. Lots of mid-year things in '62.

Toyota used up stock as it went. Wes had original FJ25 tail lights on his '64, and since mine is about a month or so older than his, I did the same. This is what makes it so hard to pin point exactly when during a production year one "thing" stopped, and another started...

Another odd item...the black and white TOYOTA rear 40 sill sticker is a 1964 thing only...

So, is mine the new bumper since it is not curved on the edges and from the way it bolts on? My old one seems to match pretty closely to the new one I replaced it with. Also Splangy, that is interesting that you have single sided turn signals on your FST 62. I would have thought all 62 cruisers had double sided. Yes, mid year stuff. Your VIN on your FST must be higher then mine.

I'd say your new new bumper, is perfect replacement for the newer style bumper you had :)

Yes...not even just mid year changes...some changes happened when ever stock was used up. Going back to my '64's FJ25 tail lights...that could represent 2...may 3 months worth of production before they went with the bigger 1964 tail lights...

Sent you a PM on your old bumper
