That is for the exciter wire offered on the '73-'78 models. I am a little surprised that you of all people did not know that. Your knowledge of wiring far surpasses mine.

:D I knew it was for the ballast bypass, what I said was I had never seen that type latching female CONNECTOR on an early starter before. The early ones I have seen were bullet connectors. Nor had I seen that color of wire used on the starter bypass before. Those wires are usually BW.

I know a lot about early harness (64-67), 69 to early 70's harnesses (71-9/72), and late 76- mid 78 harnesses, but I have a gaps in my knowledge about harnesses between 68-3/69, and 9/73 to early 76 harnesses. I know next to nothing about any harness past late 78 other than they have a lot more wires. ;) I'm slowly documenting all years wire by wire.

Toyota was pretty consistent about what color wire did what, in their main chassis wiring throughout the years. However, when it comes to the sub harnesses that connect to the main harness, seems they used what ever was available at the time, or maybe it would be better to say they used whatever their SUPPLIERS had at the time, especially in the later years.

Love threads like this, they show that no matter how much you think you know about these old trucks, there is always something new to learn.

I know this is an old thread, but I just took some photos of the early green starter in case anyone needs them for reference.

Thanks for updating this thread!
I have never seen one of those styles of starter! What year is this from?
It has got to be early, as it has the oil cups to provide lube to the bushings!

Came out of a 67 FJ45. No reason to believe it’s not original!

It is original as the TEQ and Denso part numbers match the early year starters...
Just had never actually seen pics of one of the early styles!
I did a clean up and refresh, so I’ll post some more pics next time I’m out at the shop.

I never found one on a rig newer than ‘66, so I just kind of informally pigeon-holed it with the F135 engine.

Just did some cleaning of my 69' starter--it is green as well

Just checked again under my rig and my starter looks exactly like the one John (LivinginThePast) posted on page one--I think the green I mentioned above was due to a dark shop. Makes sense since mine is a 69. Curious, what is the life span of a starter?? Mine appears to be still going strong after 50 years--knocking on every piece of wood in my shop (including my head).

Yeah, I haven’t placed assembly date on my 67 FJ45 yet, but assuming it was mid to late-66.

Was crawling around my pallet shelving looking for something to use for a home project. Found a couple of these among my starters, alternators and generators. Have a very nice one somewhere I went thru as a good spare. Didn't think these were that rare. I know my 9/67 68 model did not have the early style. That one was rebuilt in late 75 and very possible never touch since.

Old thread bump!
Just pulled this out of my 65 FJ40 so I can swap bellhousings. It’s oddly not green like @65swb45 showed. I’m guessing at some point this was refurbished? It’s missing the ID tag, but the rest is intact. I gave it a little scrub and will reinstall.

I had a fit about 20 years ago when I gave one to my rebuilder and he returned it black. 🤬

I learned way back to put wire tags on my boosters, radiators and starters: No pintura!
