If you've seen one green starter, you've seen them all. What do you want to know specifically?

Not from above but this is the starter from my 2/71 original OEM. IF you could be more specific about what you want to see I have other pics of it.

Really? It was working fine when I pulled it off my 2/71 about a year after I started working on it! That pic was taken after I had cleaned off most of the crud on it. I replaced it with a later 1976 starter some one gave me. It's in a box in the basement I will have to pull that out and look at it again. Never dawned on me it might not be Toyota!

Well I'll be! It is a Delco starter! I just blew up another pic of the back of the starter and here is what I found: You can plainly see the Delco marking. I had no idea a Delco starter would work as well as that one did on an FJ40... Learn something new everyday!

62 fj40 also has a Delco Remy in his 40, which is not OEM .

Pretty sure I still have my 64 starter someplace

I have a floor full of them I'd like to move along. A few are resto quality.

I thought there would a ton of pictures posted by now. My 68 still has the original starter but it's at my cabin for the last few months. Should have a few more I haven't looked it years but pretty sure I know where they are.

Thougth I knew right where I have a few starters.Turned out I had a igniter, alternator and starter that was torn down and turned out to be a Delco. Looked behind a few generators and early starters found this with a couple more I have checked yet. Maybe by the number someone can date it.

Showing my ignorance, but I have not seen that female 6.3 connector type before on a starter? That would mean whatever plugs in there, has to have a male connector and I have never seen any male connectors on the starter wires on the cowl harness. Also is that wire Red/Black? That is always something to do with lighting.

That is for the exciter wire offered on the '73-'78 models. I am a little surprised that you of all people did not know that. Your knowledge of wiring far surpasses mine.

Me too.

So, here's a pic.

Highlights:
Cast iron snout
Huge armature
Modular solenoid designed for field repairs
Bronze oiler cap on rear cover
Olive drab paint

The one on the left came out of a '68. Tag shows 60010
One on the right came out of a '64. Only says Denso with a Denso PN.

That explains why it's a female end. Unplugged and turn the key to start you don't have to worry about the wire grounding blowing a fuse or worse.

Grabbed the next closest starter (pallet shelving & narrow shelf) and it's another factory starter except the wire has a female bullet connector, must be older. Moved two old starters out of the way to get to the two newer starters and still have two more starters in the back. Not sure how many pictures your looking?. Have some GR starters floating around too. Sometimes the easiest way to trouble a problem is replace a part. At least that's my story way I collected them. When I bought my 68 (1974) wrecked cruisers were hard to fix and prices Toyota wanted were more then I could afford. Maybe that's why in the mid eighties to last nineties I bought plenty of spares. Funny now not only is it hard to find used parts again it's now becoming important to use OEM parts.:hmm: Was a time when adding a Delco part was suppose to be a upgrade.

I don't remember my 9/67 FJ40 having the early starter. Would have to check next time I'm around it. Think it was 1976 the last time I had to work on the starter itself. Guess I could dig out some micro-fiche and check diagrams and parts numbers. The 69-80 date Mark (Coolerman) posted doesn't surprised me since Toyota and most vendors/parts houses only go back to 1969.

My 1967 parts book shows the newer type starter with the 60040 part number. This book also includes dash pads and other 1968 parts, so it must have been printed in 1967 for the start of 1968 production. This makes sense that the new starters were used with the start of the f145 engine in 1968.

Jeff, the dash pads started in '67. One of my early purchases (I think it was my eighth or ninth cruiser back in 1988) was a dash-padded '67, registered as a '68. Imagine my surprise when I tore into the front end and found my first set of balljoint axles! That's when I decided to start paying attention to production dates. And look where it got me!

John, I didn't say the starter I pulled out of the '68 was stock for that vehicle, just that that is where I recorded it as coming from (for possible inquiry later). I already had a hunch that the vehicle had been 'around' an earlier parts rig, as the '68 picture-faced choke cable had been replaced with the earlier word-faced one.

Best

Mark
