Guys
My ’94 DD has 320k on it, 250k of which I’ve put on myself. I don’t plan on going bigger than the 33’s I’ve been running for years.
Is this upgrade considered a ‘prudent ‘ replacement due to the age/mileage factor of our rigs , or do most here runn way larger tires etc ?
I do travel offroad and totally get “peace of mind” maintenance considerations.

TIA
I have also been told unless you are "really wheeling" the truck the 105 shaft is not needed but is stronger. I probably dont need it myself. Some day i might hit the Rubicon just because, but that would be the hardest i imagine i do. I would love to do HITR but need a group to go with me. But i am leaking a little. I have done the pump and at some point should do a box rebuild. But it just needs a little fluid every 6 months so i am not in a rush. But at 340,000 it is one of the few untouched parts on the truck.

Didn't Toyota upgrade the 80 Series box the the larger shaft part number, for stock applications?

If so, was this done simply to reduce stocked part numbers? Or was it done to keep failures at bay? Maybe @OGBeno or @cruiserdan would know?

There is discussion of the 105 steering gear box in a Toyota engineering book I have at home. They were not talking about it in LC speak per se, more in engineering terms for FMEA purposes.

The stated reason was due to research and feedback from Australian users of the 80 series having sheared shafts and twisted splines. Hence the engineering change to the superseded parts (IE: new part for 105 series, interchangeable with the earlier 80 series parts).

New steering gearbox with the beefed up sector shaft came in today from UAE.

And a reproduction high pressure hose from @ToyotaMatt VINTAGE TEQ came in the other week.

I forgot to order couple fresh bolts, and need to find a shop interested in swapping. I don't have time or the space to do it myself right now.

If anyones interested in my old 250k mi core which is in good shape and ready for a rebuild, let me know. You could get it rebuilt and still drive your car and do a quick swap when it comes back in.

My new gearbox came in, if anyones interested in a spare core soonish, let me know I can sell you my old one once I get these swapped.

There's been some scuttlebut regarding recent downgrades in rebuild quality from both West Texas off-road, and Redhead. Does anyone have 2021 experience to report with either?

update, this is no longer the case. steering box went to hell within 2500 miles.

I have a new box and pitman arm on the way. From the pic, it doesn’t look like the new box comes with the pitman nut and washer. Can anyone provide new P/N or confirm the original will work?

Punch your VIN into partsouq.com for access to parts diagrams and numbers.

You can also search up a 105 series model and compare numbers

Partsouq shows the original diagram with the old box. I’m ASSuming the original nut and washer PN will work but looking for confirmation.

Original nut and washer for the pitman arm will not work. The sector shaft is larger so the needed washer and nut are also larger to fit. Cruiser Outfitters stocks all the individual parts and can send a nut and washer.

Original will work.

My apologies I was wrong about the nut and washer. Glad Kurt chimes in with a correction.

All good. While the spline is larger diameter (same number of splines), the shaft tapers down at the threads to the same 22mm thread.

Pretty sure you were one of our early 105 upgrade kit customers :D
