One more option: ship (flatbed) the vehicle to OTRAMM in Northern Virginia (~300 miles depending where in LI you're located). If you have triple AAA you might be able to get it 2/3 of the way there on that insurance. Have him diagnose it properly and be prepared to replace the engine.

Either way, new short blocks are still available last I looked for around $3500-4000, then rebuild your head for $1000, then add a few thousand for labor and other repairs, so plan on ballpark $10,000 no matter which way you go. Cheapest route might be if you find a good running engine to drop in but then unless the head gasket (and valve stem seals) has been done at some point in it's life then you may be back to the same spot in a couple of years.

There's this:

Sorry to hear about your engine. I got a Couple engine blocks and heads at the shop getting rebuilt now. Shipping is easy as long as you have access to a loading dock or forklift.

This is the easy button…would 100% recommend!!

This is such an obvious ls swap candidate .....

Buy an engine from @Fj80oregon and have it shipped to @Zjohnsonua in Alabama, ship 80 to Alabama and Zach and Rory (@Zjohnsonua @RocketCityCrzrs ) can do a quality install. Even with shipping you may save money over NY costs, but even more importantly you're working with guys that know 80 series.
might have to do that, regardless any recs on fixes or upgrades while already swapping the motor and she’s apart? already did new headers and exhaust

gonna pay for someone to ship to NY
Go see my mechanic Steve at St. James BP Automotive Center, he did my engine build and has done a few 1fz builds and head gaskets. Works on lots of cruisers. Trust worthy guy. Has an 80 and 40 himself.

How much for an engine build? OEM parts? How much for the install? What all was replaced? Curious about east coast pricing. Thanks Wes

I sourced all my parts through Onur before he moved out west and supplied them to my mechanic. New block, head, valves, springs, cams, timing cover, oil cooler, engine harness, mounts and all accessories. I don’t think I ever added up the total of parts but for all the labor, machine shop head work, pull the old engine, build and install the new one was probably around $5-6k but it’s been a few years.

That’s a great price for install, around the west coast they usually range 12-20k for a rebuild and install. A new short block is $4800 Msrp, rebuilt head $800-1200, head gasket kit $300, then depending on what you want to buy new $$$$. I have really been thinking about doing 1fzfe swaps because there is quite a bit of demand and not many trusted specialty shops around. The ones that are around are 6-12 month waits.

Yeah my mechanic did me solid on labor, Onur did me solid on parts, wouldn’t have been in the budget otherwise. It took almost a year, but it was during Covid and I tried to take short cuts along the way that ended up costing me time and money. Buy once cry once.
