ZF 8HP70 conversion IFS 100 series - anyone with experience?

I wonder how the stock ecu will act with out a transmission connected.
As long as you have a properly setup TurboLamik TCU (the main one I have seen for the 8HP, there may be others) to “replace” the stock unit I see no issue.

When swapping Supras from a similar auto to R154s etc it was an easy as switching the box, adding a pedal/master and slave, and re-wiring the neutral safety switch. Most of the JZ swaps I’ve done ran on a stock auto ECU; on these older Toyotas that don’t have CANbus systems they’re not heavily integrated.

It would be cool being able to rev-match a 2UZ when braking down steep grades, or hold a gear up I70 towards the tunnel without having to absolutely finesse the skinny pedal

I know we have a member (at least one...) who did a high hp 2uz build with a manual. I would have to think that either: a) the ECU was able to be tuned to not care about controlling the transmission, or b) not having a trans to control didn't affect the way it controlled the engine in any way. I can't remember the user name, but I seem to recall he'd imported the LC from the middle east over to the US around this time last year and ended up selling it on BaT. If anyone knows who I'm talking about, I wonder if he could speak to what was done with the tune (generally speaking) to de-couple the trans from the controller, at least as far as engine control is concerned.

Did some digging into this last night. Seems the best option for a controller would be a rus-efi 122 breakout board and a maxxefi mini.

If you guys haven't found them yet:

They also have a youtube channel:

Usshift has an aftermarket controller for the new 10 speed transmissions. Haven't done any research to see if it is feasible in the 100 series....

I just emailed the folks at wink4x4, looks like they’re in Europe. I wonder if it would be possible to get some of the parts from their kit and find out what pricing is.

I would assume you would need a AWD ZF trans? I see some transmissions out of wrecked stellantis cars and I wonder if they work.
Have you heard anything back from Wink?

When I emailed Wink back in June/July to see if the kit was compatible with the 2UZ, this is what Remy replied:

“This should be possible, however I havent tested this yet because there wasnt a UZ adapter available. I have take measurements on the engine but the adapter have to be CNC'ed first. This does not have my priority at the moment due to high demand unfortunately.”

He did mention possibly have a 2UZ compatible kit available later this year, but also said they’re not too many UZs driving around there to test.

I’m assuming there still isn’t a compatible kit as he hasn’t responded to any of my follow up emails.

His kit is for the 1HD. The 2UZ is really uncharted territory but in theory all you need is an adapter plate which is already made by DomiWorks and to hook up one of the many 8hp controllers

From further searching online apparently the folks outside the US have more manuals and have done the swap with a manual trans ECU that was already in the car they were working on.

It seems that you could get the domiworks adapter for the 8hp but the TCU tuning is tbd so you might have to figure that out yourself of find a tuner willing to try and figure it out. Most likely the best route would be to grab the turbolamik TCU

I dont think a Turbolamik will allow you to communicate back with the stock vehicle via canbus. That's why I say Maxxecu so you can push stock canbus values back and hopefully the body control module will accept them.

Everybody wants BMW stuff until its time to do BMW repairs
The transmission is made by ZHP and is used by many brands, BMW is one of them. It is considered among the more reliable modern transmissions. But that is not as funny, so I get it.

No.

Anyway, somebody else is working on a Toyota 8-speed kit for the 80 Series.
Not ready yet.
Some details here: (page 39)

And page 40

I saw 8speed.au say they were able to retain the stock 1HD series ECU with their 8 speed swap in a 100 series. I feel like doing a standalone ECU to fit with a ZF and TCU is more work.

I need to reach back out to Wink4x4 and ask how much their kit would cost to get shipped to me in CA. I can source a G series AWD 8hp70 easy enough but I'm already trying to scrape money together for a locker so I can do a re-gear. Would be really neat if I could make some money on youtube to pay for the project...

I had a ZF6HP, a couple repairs was the electronic shifter failed. $1500 parts and labor. Also a $25 plastic bridge seal failed. Cost to repair was $800 but that included new oil pan/filter.

Maybe see if they'd be open to a group buy.

Glad to have noticed this thread - I recently posted on the 'what have you done to your 100 series this week' and mentioned my new mechanic (a 4X4 mastermind) has fitted several of the 8HP gearboxes to 80 series, and I got to have a ride in one as a passenger - I was genuinely blown away by how smooth it was!

I don't know what kit he uses but I'm definitely interested in doing this to my 100 series in a few years. He said the adapter plates he uses are actually for the 100 series so I'm confident it would work well. The auto box in mine is tired, and I genuinely do think it's the best way of bringing it into the 21st century.

When I look into the domiworks transfer case adapter plates it says this:
"Adapter kit to adapter the Toyota HF2A/HF2AV Transfer case to a BMW 8HP AWD Transmission. Fits all F- and G-series AWD transmissions.

This kit is compatible with the Transfer Case HF2A/HF2AV from Land Cruiser 80-series 1990-1998. The 100-series has the same bolt pattern flange but a different input axle/gear."

When I look at Wink4x4 for their kit (with is currently just for 1HD series 100s it seems) they have a complete kit with pre filled 8hp and t-case adapter. Remy had said this when I emailed them (view attachment).

Based off of all this and pricing for the individual bits I'd estimate the DIY kit sans TCU tuning would be $4500 on the low end, maybe $6000 after you source a 8hp.

From my talking out to the folks at wink4x4 in Holland you might need some extra finagling with the TCU. I really want to do this swap though as opposed to a re-gear for my 35s

I had a quote for 5.5k to regear the tcase and I’m still waiting on a quote to regear the F/R diffs with 4.88s.

Transmission seems to be around 500-1000 plus a grand or so for the adapter plate.
