Dreaming of a V10 TDI + 8HP swap in the 100 series now...
I thought the v10 TDI Touareg sounded awesome until I watched a few videos put out by people regarding maintenance (not to mention parts availability)... woof. Engine sounds great on paper, sounds like an absolute nightmare to actually own and maintain.

Most of the nightmares I’ve heard come from people who’ve never owned one!

I had an 07 v10 and it was awesome. Maintenance is different than a 100 but you can drop the whole motor/transmission/subframe together in about 3 hours.

I am glad you enjoyed it.

Yet, you no longer have it and drive a 100 instead! "you can drop the whole motor/transimission/subframe together..." this may sound like a great argument, but honestly that shouldn't even be a thing for most cars - you shouldn't have to drop the drivetrain to work on things!
Sorry, if this comes off snarky, but I have too many friends/acquaintances who bought a big engine German car (or any VAG product for that matter) and got royally screwed over by the maintenance costs. If you live off of forums, know every little quirk and work on them yourself, you might be able to afford ownership outside of warranty. And this is coming from a serial German car owner!

*back to original topic* I am really interested in learning more about this transmission though.

What's the real-world benefit? Better fuel economy? I have to assume a more sporty drive as more gears means more time in the power band when you need it...

First gear is 34% lower than the 5 sp and 68% lower than the 4sp. Would certainly not need nor want T-case Low range gears. High altitude mountain driving would be certainly improved with more gear selections.

This is interesting. My 2017 BMW X5 has ZF 8HP75 with no two speed trasnfer case and it feels like I can pull out a stump in first gear!

I was thinking about regearing the transfer case, but this would be way better. Hopefully we'll get some good information regarding this transplant.

wow, this certainly seems like an interesting alternative if looking to go to much larger tires vs stock (35"+)... maybe not the most cost-effective vs just regearing the TC and/or diffs, but it is an interesting idea.

I don’t know how much this cost would be but I got a quote to regear the Tcase (and do a part time 4x4) for about 5.5k including a $500 core charge. Not sure how much a diff regear costs these days but with this trans you wouldn’t really need it and would only need to go into the diffs for lockers.

Regearing the diffs takes a lot more specialized tools and skill vs regearing the transfer case. My buddy and I did the high and low gears in my t-case in his garage, only cost was the parts from Cruiser Outfitters, which was about $1800 at the time.

The 8 speed box is super intriguing.

I just emailed the folks at wink4x4, looks like they’re in Europe. I wonder if it would be possible to get some of the parts from their kit and find out what pricing is.

I would assume you would need a AWD ZF trans? I see some transmissions out of wrecked stellantis cars and I wonder if they work.

from what I'm seeing there are a ton of different adapter plates, at least one of them was drilled to work with at least 3 bolt patterns for different ZF 8hp trans patterns [edit to add that I found this relevant because you'll need to see what adapter(s) is(are) available for your engine to determine what specific trans you're going to need to use), but it looks like stand-alone trans controllers are going to be $1k-1.5k... (currently researching to do a RWD LS/8HP setup in my brother's '73 C10). I've been seeing a lot of interesting swap combos using this trans and I'm getting more and more interested.

Following this based on all of the Aus guys running this transmission. If any of you guys watch TJ and Mac on YouTube, they just took a 5.1 1VD Stroker to the cape and pest the snot out of it and that transmission didn’t miss a beat, save for shearing the stock 200 series flex plate.

In our NA 4.7s over here that transmission will handle it all day long. Would be great for high elevation driving with large tires

Just bought a trans this morning for $525, figured it was cheap enough to start collecting parts for. Next is to buy the N63 adapter from Domiworks, as well as their transfer case adapter. Need this trans for the 42s I'm putting on this winter

I wonder how the stock ecu will act with out a transmission connected.

From my talking out to the folks at wink4x4 in Holland you might need some extra finagling with the TCU. I really want to do this swap though as opposed to a re-gear for my 35s

I had a quote for 5.5k to regear the tcase and I’m still waiting on a quote to regear the F/R diffs with 4.88s.

Transmission seems to be around 500-1000 plus a grand or so for the adapter plate.
