Following the advice in this thread to get a seat part: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/602746-electric-seat-controls-broken.html

I've never been to a pull-it salvage yard and figure this may be a good place to ask some questions.

- I assume I should call before getting there to see if they have any 80s? Are they common in yards?

- Will they likely even know if they have one?

- I guess it varies from yard to yard, but is it organized in any way, or do I just wander around until I find it?

- I guess I bring my own tools to pull what I need?

- Do I have to put things back together after I get what I need?

- Should the steak for the dog be cooked or raw? :hillbilly:

Sorry for the sorta off-topic/noob question, but I had to ask somebody...

- Definatly call ahead the should be able to tell you if the hav one or not. I have never seen one where I live, but they are rare in my neck of the woods.

- Good yards are organized, othrwise wander till you find what you're looking for:mad:

- BRING OWN TOOLS. I prefer to put in a backpack.

- I wouldn't put anything back together. Unless it makes sense to. Consider other people needing somthing so try not to break
stuff.

- Dogs should be put up during thee day. HAHA

80s are not real common in these yards (at least down here in La.), so I would call first.

Yes call before you go

Bring your own tools

They are rare to find here..does happen though

Here they have the cars sorted by rows and then numbered

I highly doubt you have to put stuff back the way it was

They should know their inventory if not thats a terrible business model:hillbilly:

I called around for a while and none of the ones I called said they had one. Then I just decided to go and browse to see what kinds of old Yota's they had (yes, I was bored). I found an 80 series in one of the yards that said they didnt have one, and I ended up getting a great deal on some parts. So, if you're bored, just go out there and walk around, you may get lucky!

Many small parts like switches are used on virtually all models of cars over many years by a manufacturer, so you don't necessarily need an FZJ80 of the same vintage to find one.

In the past three years I have only found one 80 sitting in a Bay Area lot. Lucky for me it was a '91, and had not been significanly picked. I pulled the interior lights, grab handles, A/C lines and bracket for the in front of battery mount, PS battery box, half of the wiring loom (to get Toyota wires, plugs and pins), etc. Had I known, I would have also taken the washer bottles and fuse panel bracket. All of these items have since been used in my truck, and cost next to nothing vs. new or on the used market. The moral, is that an FJ may be of more use than and FZJ if you are doing some common mods such as 2nd battery, washer bottle relocation, and so on.

Steve

P.S. Pick N Pull has an online tool to use for searching their inventory.

P.P.S. 4Runner, Rav4, and many other older Toyotas share interior and electrical parts with the 80. Roam around!

am I guessing correctly that "you pull it" yards are going the way of the Dodo? I can see that lawsuits from people getting hurt and insurance issues would put a damper on those things these days. There are of course lots of idiots that would get hurt on a sand beach, but admittedly a salvage yard full of old sharp metal and heavy objects is a particularly likely place to get hurt for morons...
If they do disappear, too bad, I like the idea. Wish there would be some of those reasonably close to where I live or go. I could get addicted.

In the Houston area, I found 10-12 80's in one day. There are deals to be had.

Doesn't look like the one I go to is going away, in the past 2 years, I've seen two FZJ and one FJ (after I got into 80s)

Got lucky and was able to pull a lot of decent stuff for my own rebuild at the time, visors, rubber shift knob, CDL switch, tool bags, PS battery box, dome lights, grab handles, and a bunch of stuff I don't remember. The only thing I regret not pulling was an OEM starter from a 1993 truck, could have been a big boy but oh well.

If you have a pick/pull yard close, definitely scout it out...there's no real schedule for them to crush cars so you really gotta jump on the things you want or else it could be gone the next day.

I always wondered about those myself as there are several here in DFW. I should go over to one when I need to kill time and see what goodies I can find. :D

Sent from deep in the mountains of Honduras using only sticks and rocks.

Love you pull it yards. Haven't seen an 80 near any of them here though :(, but like said yota made a lot of "universal" parts. If there is something specific I need I just hit up the parting out section here.

Got one up here that consistently has Land Cruisers in it... currently has a 40, 55, 60, and a few 80's. They get picked clean very quickly...

I always look for Rav4's (the manual's have CDL switches that work on 80 series), and LR Discovery's to grab their cupholders.

Always a good time at the you-pull-it type places. Lots of interior bits match other Toyota's, as was mentioned above. I fixed my center console with pieces from a Corolla.

Wear cargo pants and a good belt, you'll want to pocket a bunch of little stuff.

Every Self Service Junkyard Ive been to (and i have been to quite a few) always makes you sign a waiver that says you are not an idiot, and if you do decapitate yourself on their make-shift jackstands, that you wont hold them liable.

Not in OR. or at least the many across the state I've been to. Most just have big chipped painted signs saying don't mess yourself up.

The last 80 I found at a u pull it in Portland was picked clean. What I didn't like was that folks had actually gone out of their way to break things (side markers in the rear, instrument panel, other little stuff).

I spent 3 days wandering through nearly every you pick it lot in Phoenix and found no 80's. One guy tried to be extra helpful and said he had one at their other yard. I followed him around town to the other lot. He was so proud when we walked into the yard, he pointed over his shoulder and said, here it is. He was point to a land rover discovery... I found a lot of those around. There is one part I could use from a disco and haven't found a single cup holder in them.:bang:

edit
I did find two in a regular yard, they have to pull the parts for you though. I was able to get a couple interior trim pieces and a sun visor from those. One has lockers on it too.

There has been one sitting for a couple of months in the Pick N Pull on 56th street north of Chandler blvd. Locked axles are gone, along with some other stuff. John
