That was a fast Beemer for it's time!! Guy i worked with had 1 😉
Dad had done the 4 wheel disks and dual webbers etc in the early 90’s, we used to go to slalom events together, I had a 68 BMW 1600 with dual Solex carbs on a 2L and 5speed outta a 320i.
Great memories.
Neat solo thing I did was run 4 front calipers as the struts had dual ears for use on either side, stopped great but got rotors hot quick.

Apparently the “friction fit” on the bushings isn’t much, I had to redo all the OD to get them in, frustrating doing stuff twice.

But progress was made and torqued the park drum too, staked the nut.

Measure 8 times, cut once, assemble, and then WTF?!?
There's always the 2nd time... (and 3rd, and 4th)
As long as you learn what went wrong the last time, right?

Yeah I didn’t want them loose, had to smack them in and then took forever to remove once I realized the pins wouldnt fit :slap:

Almost done the CAD on the caliper mounts, want to sleep on it before buying steel…a couple details floating still.

Will be a 2pc mount, 3/4” thick mounted to the housing to get the offset I need and then smaller 1/2” thick for the caliper ears. Nice little project that will get me some lathe time again.

Question:
Anyone know what is the correct steel to ask for, that has a smooth finish without the mill-scale?

That looks great Jason! Looking forward to seeing how that turns out.

According to Dave G., ask the supplier if they carry P&O (pickled AND oiled), or something to that affect. It’s clean and absent of any mill scale.

Thanks D! Yeah I’ll have to see what they carry here in that thickness.
You want CRS or Cooled Rolled Steel.

Also great info Jim, not sure what thickness the locals will carry, website said “sheet metal” so will call them
Guessing you want the cold rolled steel for it's strength for that part, but it's almost double in price over hot at my steel yard.
Ron I don’t have a milling machine so want nice clean square surfaces, the mill scale will just cause me grief on these.

Fortunately all 4 parts are fairly small, so price point shouldn't be too painful. Smoking busy tender season at work so didn’t do more than think about it today.

I stopped at the metal supply / water jet place to get a quote on my caliper brackets, to my shock it was 25% cheaper to get the 4 pieces in T6061 than mild steel…how can that be?

If these were racecar parts I would have planned on alum rather than steel, oh well I’ll have them for the weekend 🙌🏻

**I did ask about CRS or oiled but he said special order sheets only. The alum will be a nice square surface at least.

First time Waterjet project, it‘s pretty tidy.
Was shocked how cheap the Aluminum was, most of the invoice was cutting.

Try for lathe time this weekend.

Had a great day over in the shop with dad, figured out the 4 jaw and didn’t ruin any tooling, win!

I had to laugh, this is the screwdriver he has next the lathe for changing carbides…he still has the original tool roll from the green pig somewhere.
