There is only 1 way for both dots to line up.
Only one way.... okay but I’m in control of the cam right now. I could simply stick it in any old way and it would go. But I’ll make sure the crank dot is in its orientation I had before and put the cam back in then I’ll get under and spin it to watch the way the lobes point.

Is this appear correct for no. 6 compression? First photo.
And for no. 1? Second.

Ok and now spun the crank one full turn to TDC... dots not lined up.
Lobes at no. 6 pointing toward lifter side of block.

Lobes at no. 1 pointing toward lifter side too.

Forgive my stupidity here.

Remember it takes 2 turns of the crank to spin the cam one turn. So spin it around as many times as you want and every second crank rotation the dots should line up. The only thing to make sure that the piston it true top dead center...but only you have the crank right in front of you.

Each dot is at a fixed point within the 360 degree rotation of travel for both the crank and the cam. You can spin the crank backwards 7 times, forward 3, and adjust the cam while doing a handstand - the dots will still only line up one way :)

Ok well they’re lined up.
So moving forward. Oil pump is back installed too.
Next up is cleaning the sealer I gobbed over the edge of the timing plate so I can install the oil pan and gasket.

Or timing gear cover, hb pulley, lifters, then the cover then the oil pan?
Oil pan was the first thing I removed. Maybe keeping it open is best till last?

Keep it open until you at least get the pushrods and pushrod cover back on.
Yeah makes the most sense. Thanks.

Timing cover back on. HB on. But not torqued yet. Will be borrowing a friends wrench to get to 144 (mine only goes to 100).

Lifters... not much in the book. Machinist had looked at them and said they looked to be in very good condition. Should I lightly clean the OD where they dip below the block? As well as dip the ends that touch the lobes in oil w/ zinc additive?

I would lube them lifters before instal with something! You got it!
“Your instincts serve you well...”

Can’t wait for the start up video tomorrow! ;)

I put the zinc additive in my oil at every change now. I question if I need to do this given the extra expense, but I put a new cam and lifters in my truck and since the old ones were so bad and hard to keep the valves gapped correctly I decided to just continue adding it with my new setup. One day I’ll pull them and see if it helped at all.

What oil are you running? I’m pondering going Castrol 20/50.

Here's my oil on my rebuilt 2f with 4,300 miles on it: Delo 400 15w-40 conventional.

I've changed the oil 3 times now and am adding 4oz of Lucas Zinc with each change. At original start up I had a full 16oz of Lucas.

I believe your Castrol 20-50 would be a good choice also.
