Well, now that I am about to start shipping out the next batch of York Kits starting on Sat and the Battery Disconnects are just waiting on laser etching, and the rear air tank shelf is in production, I think its time to FINALLY get moving on the Rear Tire Carrier for the 80 Series. This is new to me but not new to MUD since it was previously manufactured by AJIK. Since I acquired AJIK it meant the tire carrier was one of those things that I had the option to bring back. Since so many people keep bugging me about it I'm going to bring them back.

I know the first question will be price. I don't know yet but that is only because I am looking for input. The modifications and additions and options available will determine the final price but I do want to try and stay close to what it was previously. But I am going to do something radically different this time around... I AM DETERMINED TO MAKE A PROFIT!!! I've been bad about basically selling things for cost or less than cost and I'm just not going to do that, especially not on this.

Some notes:
• There will be a left hand and right hand configuration.
• The carrier is the same in each image but there are different hitch configurations on them.
-Previously a few were made with the 2" receiver installed in the center but then it was decided to not offer that with concerns of weight on the bumper and possible over loading. This used the Slee mounting hole pattern and not the stock Factory Toyota holes.
-The next option was created to allow use of the factory bumper holes for mounting and still give the user a 2" receiver without making any cuts of mods to the bumper. This option was never previously produced.
-The blank plate uses the factory mounting holes. With all the hitch configurations it previously used a mounting tab that was tapped and held (2) bolts, two of these where included with each carrier.
• I am adding a plate to the rear of the Upper Tire Mount Plate to close that area up and get rid of the hard to weld areas.
• The next area to get a cover plate is the upper arm where the latch mounts to enclose that area.
• The last place will be under the spindle lock plate that will close off that tight area.
• There are gussets that support the upper arm that are not shown.

Shipping boxes is a pretty big concern because they aren't cheap but I need to make sire everything is secure. Of course I need to work out freight shipping as well.

If there is something that you have heard about the previous units that should be rectified, I am open to that also.

I'm showing you folks these just to get your input and thoughts about design and product additions before I go into full production.

Some options that are being considered are: ladder, can carrier, Yeti carrier. I will NOT being going nuts on options. If there are too few interested in any particular option then it will be removed as an option.

PLEASE ask your questions here in this thread instead of PMing me unless its something you are serious to keep private but I much prefer to keep things transparent, warts and all. For those that have my stuff already you will know I don't mess around with quality.

Design work will be most of January so any and all changes/suggestions must happen within the next few weeks. I am planning to start production in February and ship in March. Knowing me, I will go overboard on something and then production will get pushed and it will get annoying. But I always deliver...and almost always late :flipoff2:

I am going to adding links to the old threads so that relevant information can be added here. I will also be making the next post about specs. As specs are modified I will be updating post #2 of this thread.

Here are the original threads so that you can get more information about the original design and discussions:

What was the cost on the originals? I think it is a great idea. As someone that doesn't necessarily want to change my rear bumper I like it.....especially if it doesn't make my hitch unusable and doesn't require me fabbing anything....which I can't do.

It was originally offered for $800 +shipping (no promises what the price going forward will be). It was originally done as a group buy so there was one carrier to one customer. I am doing a production run and will most likely make this a stocking item but don't think I will go crazy with stock. I MIGHT stock maybe 5 more than what is pre-ordered.

I have a driver side mounted one. I like it. It did cover the license plate.
I used aluminum angle stock.
Bolted that to the original mounting points but made it longer so the license plate in now offset to the passenger side. Added a light over the plate. Looks OK. Works well.
No pic because I'm not at home.

Thanks for that. I have three ideas for the license plate relocation that I'll experiment with. Any feedback on the tire carrier? Good or bad?

Option for stainless latch, cut spindle longer and add teflon pad for latch pin to ride on.

Stainless latch, I think, will be standard. I'm ordering in a few and going to see what I prefer. I've had two mentions about the spindle length so that will likely be part of the production. Teflon pad for sure and a good suggestion.

Definitely interested, with the understanding that bringing things up to your standards may raise the price point.

Curious to hear from those who have the originals about longevity, squeaks, etc. for possible improvements.

I'm not going to be happy unless it's exactly as I expect it to be. I do realize that I tend to go overboard on things but I am not looking to match pricing with the other complete bumper options out there. This is its own animal and why I'm moving forward with it.

Your reputation precedes you. That's why I'd want to buy yours instead of fabbing my own.....

Machined cap for the spindle cover with O ring seal or gasket.

Good Powder coating, find out who did the powder coating for Hanna.

Possible welded or nutserts to add options down the road to work on budgets.

Sell them possibly unpainted for the DIY guys who don't want a full bumper and can weld. Cut your freight/shipping on partial DIY kits with tire mount unwelded and no paint/powder.

Your in a niche market for these. DOM is overrated for the the Tire carrier tubing. Look at the price difference between 160 bend of DOM vs 2x2 .125/.187 square with 4 cuts welded.

IIRC, the ajik kits included an offset license plate bracket. I think the new kits should also, but I would hope it wouldn't add too much expense (pretty simple to rig). Anything that can be stainless, like the latch, probably should be. IIRC, the latch, when closed, rests against a thick nylon/polypropylene pad. This same hard plastic material may also serve as a good material for a pad (like a race) for the pin to ride on. Just a thought.
