Hoooooo this is cool. Looking forward to seeing what pricing is going to be.

Ok folks I am at a slight crossroad. I need to decide on a finish for each piece, mainly because I do not ever want to ship something incomplete/unfinished. Just won't do it.

For the aluminum insert and shelf I am leaning either black typeIII hard anodize or my typical textured black powdercoat. For the steal door and bracket I am HEAVILY leaning just primer paint so that it doesn't rust waiting to be shipped. the other steel bits will be yellow zinc plated.

Thoughts?

Sounds good to me. Large difference between anodized vs powdercoated in terms of durability (remember it was a cardboard box before) scratch resistance, finish, cost?

I would only really worry that I could scratch something up on the install and then have to be reminded by the mistake. <-- can you tell I have issues with that?

I would think that textured finish like powdercoat could have some disadvantages on the interior of the glove box. If hard anodizing leaves a smoother finish and isn't cost prohibitive that would seem the way to go for me. I think primer paint on the door is fine then we can match it to our rigs interior when we get them. Or you could do a batch each of brown and blue/grey if you wanted to be really finicky about it.

I do enough anodize and powder coating now that cost is roughly the same.

Well I do think smooth would be better then to reduce the potential for scratching stuff up that one might throw in there absent mindedly electronics with screens, CD's you cant find the case for, pistols with a shiny finish etc. Though I suppose a shinier finish will mean stuff slides about more in there? Damn-it now I don't know.:bang:

I agree with the metal door painted or primed, I would prefer the Aluminum just cleared. It is so much nicer in silver. I have never understood why a hole in the dashboard is black. Light or not, you cannot see anything in there.
Maybe leave it up to the end user on options, Unpainted (so we can do it ourselves) and powder coated, anodized options.

There is coating and there is lining. Ultimately I may do both for exactly the reasons you stated.

As you know, I think very highly of your manufacturing skills and your dedication and devotion to complete detail in you design effort. I’ll be placing an order as soon as you deem the product ready for sale, but prior to the opening bell just a few brief questions...

1. Your box design allows us to use our OEM door and latch allowing us to order the box and shelf only (TRUE/FALSE)?

2. In addition to the standard painted steel door, we can order a polished stainless door with the box (TRUE/FALSE)?

You’re one brave fabricator and I commend you for opening up the design process to us limited production FJ62 pinhead aficionados. By allowing us to follow your progress and contribute to the various options arising along the way, I believe you’ve generated a loyal following eagerly awaiting your future projects.

Best wishes for a successful introduction of you product.

1. TRUE
2. FALSE*

* I’m still waiting on pricing but if the cost isn’t too prohibitive I may only offer a stainless door/bracket and with that I don’t need to finish it. Finish will be on the individual.

I vote powdercoat for the insert and shelf. Not sure how the cost compares to anodizing, but the powdercoat would give it a more OEM look.

I'm a fan of powder coating the whole dang thang. I think it will be a durable finish and look great for a long time.

Honestly if the cost difference is nominal then I have no preference. Both are hard coatings that are abrasive resistant which is really all that matters.

All of the pieces are in and test fit and shiznit is looking really good!

I got in first bid and I’m not super excited. Waiting on two other bids to see which makes sense. I’ve been warned by all of my metal shops that metal prices are going up across the board. F’ing sucks. Oh well.

See what you think folks:
