Who has a Warn 8274 Winch on their FJ40?

Sounds about right. I have the original winch on my 1969 and it is a Bellview. The daddy to the 8274. Warn bought Bellview around then and used the design to enrich their design.

I have 2 of those 8k bellview winches, labeled as Warn. Cable operated. One came on my 71 and I have had the other so long I don’t remember where it’s from.

It’s missing some bits. But it’s on there.

I bought my 8274 not working and all broken up. Replaced with new parts. Easy to find parts and rebuild. As long as the case, drum, and gears are in good shape you can rebuild with no problem. I spent around $200 on the broken winch and probably spent around $700 on all new parts with synthetic rope. It’s been a few years so do not remember the exact costs.

It is my favorite winch for an FJ40.

I looked up what the number 8274 stood for a few years ago. The 8 stands for 8000, 2 speed or something like that, and 74 is the year it was introduced.

^^^^^

Close, it stands for 'Two Way' (Free Spool and Power in).

I bought mine about 4 years ago or so for $350 I believe. Found it on Craigslist in Kentucky and drove there from North of Atlanta and back without my wife knowing about it. I believe it’s a really early model because there’s no serial number on it.

Bought mine new in 1983 and still running it. No telling how many hundreds of hours I have on it.

The Belleview was indeed the predecessor/inspiration for the 8274. The Belleview was made from 1959-1973. The Warn 8274 was introduced in 1974.

M=Model
8= 8,000 lb. pulling capacity
2= 'Two Way' (Free Spool and Power in)
74= Year of introduction

Scored mine on Craigslist, seller bought it new for his Bronco before he figured out it was a feet forward mount. Couldn’t be happier, it’s a stout winch.

I believe if they were labeled as Warn, it was after they purchased Bellview, but, they did not introduce the 8274. So, if the 8274 was introduced in 1974, then somewhere between 1971 and up to 1974 Warn was selling Bellview with their label on it. So, you have a short run with a history and certain value.

I have 8274's on two of my trucks and a couple more parts winches on the shop floor. I think I have enough parts to put together one more winch for the '82 FJ40. The 8274's are a lot of fun to rebuild. Super simple.
