I'll have to check next time I'm there. I usually get whichever diesel oil is on sale at the time.

For a mid-life 2F my recommendation is cheap 15W40 diesel oil ...
Oil brands don't matter much, since they are all rated CJ or SN....

So... at my local AdvanceAuto... any favorites (or ones to stay away from)?

Go with the Rotella T - It has the highest ZDDP of those listed. You should be able to find it cheaper. The Motorcraft is usually fine oil, too, but a bit expensive for Dino oil.

2 Gals of Rotella T w/ a bottle of ZDDPlus (4oz) will bring the concentration of ZDDP to around 1800 PPM. The old SJ standard. Run it 5K miles, and with a with a consumption of around 600 ppm, moderate duty use, that'll still put you at around 1200ppm: The min recommended level for these kinds of old-folks engines :D

But practically speaking, any of the above oils would work fine with additive.

Oh, adding the Delo 400 LE has the lowest zinc at around 800 ppm, last I looked.

As Spike said, stay away from the Delo 400LE. Not sure on the Peak or Motorcraft. Rotella, GTX, Delvac 1300 and Valv Premium Blue are all good. No matter what, pick up a small bottle of ZDDP or engine break-in as you will need to add a bit, but most should be reasonably safe to run in your engine.

The delo I have found is the old multigrade, not the new LE for post 2007 low-emissions vehicles. Price was 3.25 per quart. I you are interested in a DFW hook up, let me know.

Heheheeheeee... I can see it now, "Medical ZDDP" shops, right next to the Med Mary Jane shops! For what ails your engine! Illegal in two States!

Availability

15600-41010 is a decent Jap filter.

Too bad it is now discontinued.

CDan, IIRC, has about 60 left.

Wix would be my next choice since it is readily available.

Are you positive about being discontinued? is that Japan made only or also Thailand? I should have bought 2 cases when i had a chance,i will e-mail my couz back home and check the supplier.

I don't run the -YZZD3. Made in Thailand. Not interested.

I still have about 20 -41010's so I guess when they run out I will switch to the WIX1515.
Could i buy a couple of your filters? maybe i call Cdan.

Denso is the Toyota filter OEM, but the aftermarket ones are made in Thailand, OE in Japan ... They seem identical to me: Same dimensions, weight, valving (that I can see), O- ring...

Tall Wix is a tight fit in the 60. Haven't tried it on the 40, yet.

:meh:

Hey! Where's da Velvet Fog ?!?

I've been making my own blend lately. Ige changes the oil on her FZJ80 pretty often, I keep her old (synthetic) oil in gallon jugs. When my Rotella dino gets low, I top it off with the used synthetic...
I keep the jugs full, the bad stuff sinks to the bottom over time, I use the stuff off the top.

I had a tired old 2F in my FJ60 and I'd do something sorta like this. I knew that at some point the engine would be coming out and it was burning and leaking a lot of oil. So I quit changing the filter and oil, instead whenever I changed the oil in one of the Cruisers with a good engine I'd save that oil and dump it in the worn 2F. I think I did this for at least a year, could have been longer.:hillbilly:

Man, Cruiser owners are so cheap, they expect change on a penny...

I run Wix 51515 (O'Reilly's) and Castrol GTX 10W-40 (Cheap at Walmart)

I might try the Rotella T next time but I really don't think I need a thicker oil in my motor.

It's not about the viscosity, it's about the additives..

Yeah I understand that. I'd prefer to run proper viscosity though. The engine will outlive me either way. Or I'll just rebuild it again. Don't really mind doing that. Only costs about 30 years of oil changes

lol proper viscosity.. The F series motors were designed when multi-weights were not even invented yet ;)

Yes I am positive. There are a few dealers out there with quantities of 5, 3, 6, etc. they done from TMSUSA. CDan has the biggest supply around with maybe 50-60 filters.

I cannot unfortunately sell any of mine. I use them on my 2F and 1FZ-FE.

No, not the little OEM filter.
The BIG Wix 51773 filter for dump truck & forklift application.

The little filter is the 90915-20004 factory fill filter for the 2JZ/late 1FZ/2UZ/1GR engines. Still one of the best filters around from Denso. But you cannot get that one as a "Denso" marketed filter. Internal Toyota procurement only.

Have you chopped one of each up and compared? I'd be interested in seeing the results.

The 15600-41010's can be had with a Thai PN suffix as can the 90915-20004 filters.

I'm just not interested in Thai substitutes. These outsourced manufacturing is all bean counter costs cutting.

If little Japanese hands didnt make them, I'm not that interested. :)
