What shovel should I buy?

Any old shovel will do, get a couple quick fists and mount it up.

a std long handle spade shovel works best, sometimes you need the long handle to get way under the vehicle

Get one with a wooden handle. I've had issues with fiberglass handled tools deteriorating.

Just pick one that will look good sitting on the rack, unmoved, for 5 years after the sun has done its damage and then leaves a darker black patch on the roof rack where the rest of the rack is ashy black.
