@Varty Yo - my quadrajet does the same thing. Set the idle to 750, and it climbs to about 900 after revving/driving for a while. Quite annoying.

Remenaniced about it...

Then got back to enjoying my cruise. Last weekend before my season starts.

Great pics Danny!!! (You've just made me download another.)

This is probably the last time my :princess: drove mine..

I can still hear the graunching noises in my head as she searched the box for the next gear :D (That pic is 1980/1981 I believe...)

You know, Tom... the more I look at your picture, the more I think these trucks were designed to be driven exactly that way!! With determination and a "you'd better not get in my way!!" attitude!!

In fact, Dianna drove 44 for the first time today and I noticed she had that same look on her face and tension in her shoulders!!

Of course, she was in the driver's (left) seat :D

I have got 79 model. Earlier this summer I replaced the gas tank with new one. Then in October decided to take off carb and have Jim C. rebuild it. Because of rust in tank and it would not idle.
During the wait I removed intake/exhaust manifold had it resurfaced and spot faced, made an EGR delete plate and welded up EGR tube into manifold, Painted manifold with VHT paint.

Fabbed up new PS bracket and installed it at the air pump location and new belts

After getting back carb from Jim C, I tackled desmogging my rig. I followed "my desmog thread" and my emission manuals. Installed new silicon vacuum lines.

Here is the best part....after a 3 month slumber ...... I pumped the gas, pulled the choke and BAM!!! SHE FIRED RIGHT UP!!!!
AND I TOOK HER FOR A 150 MILE TRIP THIS WEEKEND!!!

Sticking linkage/cable, weak return spring, binding throttle shaft, timing change, ?

Does it stay at 900? If you readjust back to 750, what happens?

I lubed up/straightened out the linkage shortly after I bought it (and rebuilt the whole carb). You can set it to 750 all day long at idle, but as soon as you rev it up to 2000RPM, it never comes back down to 900. When I first bought it, it stuck at 1100, but the rebuild/unbending the linkage/lubing the linkage helped. It's something of a jerry-rigged setup (Buick Auto-transmission Quadrajet on a 283 SBC, ghetto "manual choke" setup, instead of hot air, no fast idle, slightly warped, but no air leaks I can find etc.) so I've just settled on "something is wrong" and filed it under "I'll get to it later." For now, it works...

I plugged 22 holes in my dash and roll bar. The saga continues (too fill all the mysterious holes everywhere on my 40). I refurbed the roll bar pads and am very happy with the way they turned out. I also ordered a lower dash kit from fj40dash.com. The lower dash pads look GREAT and are well made and thought out. They

use studs and nuts instead of clips which is great for positive mounting but a HUGE PITA to put on (most noticeably behind the cluster and near the steering wheel) Anyway... the pics.

Blowed out my oil filler cap somewhere... Duct taped the filler hole and tied the duct tape down with nite ize ties and drove on with oily smoke coming up thru the passenger side of the cab. Rolled the window down and smoke was sucked out.

Got a lot of stares... But always do... Although this time was probably everyone trying to see if my Wife was chain smoking. No, she doesn't smoke... Neither of us do... It was Gunner!

Ordered new oil cap, PCV, air filter, couple of short specialty hoses and something else from beno... Waiting for them to arrive - hoping to have time to try a couple of PCV plumbing ideas, from another thread about "blow-by vs low compression".

Getting the Tundra ready for our trip to Austin - back in about a month.

Only one good picture this time - and it looks blurry

Replaced upper radiator hose (did lowers not long ago), inspected thermostat, replaced thermostat gasket and rubber gasket. Don't know why I thought of this, but I cut strips of nylon webbing and put under hose clamps to hopefully cushion the hose clamp.:meh:

Gunner looks sad in that last pic. He must know you are accusing him of doing something he would never do. Shame, shame. Poor Gunner. Maybe it's because he is afraid he won't be able to go to Texas with you.

Have a safe trip! Hope you find some good info about the 40 and a powerplant.

Don

Thanks Don!

Gunner was sad because I wasn't kicking his tennis ball against the wall anymore - he loves to play!

I'll be online now and again, but I've got some Papa-Do's to take care of - the largest adventure will be tearing out an old deck and building new.

whent to the garage started it and made sure the mice werent eating it .3 degrees and it started right up without running the battery down

On the FJ40:
  • Repl rear main seal
  • Repl rear pinon seal
  • Front axle reseal
  • Installed rear disc brake conversion
  • Upgraded the H4 headlights wth 90/100w bulbs - new harness w/ relays, ceramic plugs
  • rebuilt the GM tilt steering column - got my horn back!
  • installed new brake hoses
  • rewelded battery box mounts
  • Installed metal shut off valve in rear ARB air line to keep the oil from being pushed up from the differential on long pressure building highway drives. Yes I replaced the appropriate seals in the locker which helped but didnt completely eliminate the spitting of gear oil at the underhood selonoid. I will switch it off when hitting the trailhead.
Finishing it today and hopefully get it back for weekend testing :steer:

How'd you go about filling the dash holes? I've got some big ones to fill from guages someone put in. Think i should just cover it with sheet metal.

I've seen some pretty weir things posted on here by guys talking about what previous owners have done but this one had me rolling on the floor laughing. (My buddy wasn't)

Helping a good buddy of mine. It's been approximately 3 years since he had the 40 running. We dragged his 1970 40 in the shop and started working on it. It seems he has a break in the wiring somewhere. I pulled back the speedo light console and here is what I found. Check out the wire connector!!!

I don't know Rick... I think yours was actually cleaner!

I used to see some some very creative patches, when I lived on an Ozark farm, back in the early sixties... Before the advent of duct tape helped solve a lot of moonshiner problems.

This one is the most creative and dumbest I've seen!

I wonder if Rudi ( @bj40green ) would approved...
