Sprayed penetrating oil on the spare tire carrier, bumperette, hitch and rear door hinge bolts. Going to let that soak for a while then start removing things for the 4plus tire carrier install and related scope creep projects.

Got some color match spray cans made. I use one of the kick vents as my go to part for paint matching. Easy to remove, small, but enough surface area for the paint color scanner.
The guy at the paint shop said the match might be off. The color scanner gives a 'score' and a lower number is better. Apparently the score was 1.0 for mine and 0.5 or lower is better for a sure match. Got the paint anyways. It's the single stage with the activator in the can, so once activated it's good for about 72hrs. So I'll be preparing a stack of paint projects to use a whole can.

Took the hounds for a walk on the beach this morning. Great surf at the Wedge in Newport Beach.

Whatever it is, it won’t be as off as the can you left with me Mike!😛 I used a little of it to respray the hi lift jack handle on the Karma Cruiser to something that more closely resembles the factory color than red.😉

@brooklyn in asking about a sniper poll, here’s my thinking.

It is no secret that I believe the Sniper has been a remarkable addition to myFJ40. I had bought mine from Mosley Motors going on 3 years this August but waited nearly 16 months to install it. I assumed my Weber was running well other than a few warmup things that were routine consistent. The biggest was the slight coughing during the first mile after startup when cold and slow acceleration when stepping on the accelerator from a standing position… it’s not that it’s slow. It’s just not responsive

Beyond that, driving it was reliable and more than acceptable. It was the other reviews of the system that eventually pushed me to get it installed. I think it took me about 2 weeks start to finish with just 2 ors or so here and there.

For me the positive is: starting so far in any weather or temperatures…perfect. Accelerator response…perfect. Mileage…better.
You’re in Brooklyn? If you find yourself in South Jersey…pm me you can check it out for yourself Jackson, Lakehurst, Tom River..all nearby

Yep, my paint is definitely more yellow while the OEM dune beige seems a bit more green to me.

Those old cans I left with you were color matched off the same kick vent as I used this time. So hopefully its a good match for my 40.

Was down your way yesterday, I dropped the FJ40 off at Kenny Dean's in Waretown, NJ. He seams to always have a FJ40 or 60 in the shop. Thanks, for your thoughts on the your sniper install. My current carb setup isn't too bad, but cold starts and some heat soak issues has be opting not to pull the truck out as often as I might.

Pretty much dittos my experience as well. I did not install the in-tank fuel pump and have not had an issue with the inline walbrow pump that Mosley offers with his kit. The Sniper is very sensitive to even a small manifold gasket or carb-to-manifold leak whereas a carburetor is much more forgiving. As long as you get those sealed properly, the Sniper is self tuning. I’ve seen one and heard of several other instances where the sniper’s internal fuel injector failed. So I keep a spare one with me at all times (it’s about a 20min job to change it out). Both Mosley and Redline sell pretty nice kits. Mosely’s hard fuel lines are top notch, but I prefer Redline’s throttle cable adapters and carb adapter plate (although their adapter plate is pricey!)

Just dropped off the FJ40 at a shop for complete brake line replacement.

Tempted to say while you’re at it do the sniper upgrade. Have we ever done a polling on the sniper— love it, would do again or wished I hadn’t?

Hope the brake line work goes well!

My ‘67 is carbureted, my ‘78 is fuel injected. At this point, I think if I had a vehicle with smog equipment, I’d desmog it and fuel inject it. My ‘67 had a 2F and didn’t have smog equipment, and I’m perfectly content with it carbureted.

I thought about it putting an electronic ignition, but she's never given me any issues!

Regarding the Hyperspark ignition:

It is seemingly the perfect match if you’re going that route. I’ve had pertronix modules for my 57 Ford, and a few other “classic” type cars and it really never faltered. For points vehicles that always appeared to be a good transition. When I saw the hand held had a display position for timing I thought this would be interesting to watch the advance curve that the ECU “thinks” is best for the current operating condition since it’s not necessarily fixed by engine vacuum or centrifugal speeds.

Additionally, it could be totally customizable along with the fuel mixes. I am truly a rank beginner but, I am a good reader and learner. The manual is complex but with some YouTube and Holley on-line video, a good but basic knowledge is readily attainable. I may never go further than I am currently but the option of going, is there.

As for the spare parts. Like @Trigger6 I agree. When carbureted I carried all kinds of carb parts and linkage setups in case. Hard to break the habit and in my parts bag I have an spare IAC motor, new O2 sensor, spare fuel injector, throttle linkage cable and connector. Most likely I’ll never need them. I don’t travel off-road anymore and this is NJ…the most densely populated freakin’ state in the nation. How long could I possibly be stuck for? It’s just nice knowing that IF something screwed up, getting it home is not out of the question

Anyone with a Sniper should enjoy watching Lone Wolf Video @zerotreedelta who modified a Hyperspark distributor as well as the Holley Install Video on YouTube

I need to add these to my list. I don’t have spares and haven’t thought about what I would carry. Great list!

I got through disassembly and about 10% of cleaning on a knuckle rebuild this weekend. Going to need a new tie rod and drag link as both were visibly bent.
