Restored an FJ40 16360-61023 9/77 - 1/80 Carb Cooling Fan.

For those who are interested the only difference between the 61023 and the 16360-61024 1/80 - 7/80 is the connector. Everything else is the same.

All parts were powder coated and factory hardware was yellow zinc plated.

This is nice. When you do a project like this, with a small amount of plating, do you do the plating work at home (eg with a Caswell kit)? Or do you have somewhere you take it? Seems like taking just a few bolts and a bracket to a plating place would be way more expensive than need be, but maybe I'm wrong?

There is a place in New Bedford, MA that does my plating. I drop off a bucket of items and they turn it around in a few days. For as long as the EPA allows them to do it…

The Caswell kit may be the solution for most since these services are being shut down for environmental reasons.

I have looked into the Casewell kit but don’t like those chemicals…

I painted the boat bottom to match the tow tractor. It pulls the boat well.

Brought home 40+ small parts from the painters. Did more plating (painters forgot to paint the brackets that attach to the windshield frame so I plated them), I will paint them if it looks weird after install, decided to plate the door pins because they get messed up being hammered in, probably going to do the same with all door hardware. Not excited about removing the top but I like to take the front doors off.

Purchased some engine accessories from Toyota. Was sad to get rid of the OG starter in exchange for a gear reduction but it was 45 years old and I’m going to be driving this a lot. The work continues. Should have the tub back home on the 10th then some serious re-assembly starts.

Liking how the rustic green turned out. Was shooting for that blueish green look and nailed it.

@Pitter Patter THIS IS MY KIND OF PAINT JOB! with my luck I would scratch or chip it simply walking by. But I love it

Here’s a quick question I’ve not dealt with…. Another nice day here in the northeast…Easter Eve. Took the 40 out for another few errands and stopped to get some $4.15 gas. I notice that from the full mark to the 3/4 mark, it only takes a 2 gallon can to top off and read full. After a few short miles, it’s at 3/4 again so…I fill it up as I had with the 2 gallon can only….it took 7 gallons. I am not relying on the gauge solely but since it is a new tank and has the sniper electric fuel pump in the tank….would my sending unit float benefit from a slight bend upward…OR is that some thing not to screw with.

Right now it’s just a gauge view and in the event of the fuel level dropping way low to E, there would actually be more fuel in there than I would be led to believe as it sits currently.

Frankly, I’m just looking for stuff to do I guess…. The small details

Mine never reads full. However empty is accurate, which is what’s important to me.

Mine was on E the other day and I put 15 gallons in.. 😬

Mine will stays on full for about 30 miles and goes below the line on E. I usually track miles driven on my phones speedo app.

Just roll with it, and consider yourself lucky. I remember being told many years ago that in tank pumps should always be kept above half if possible, because a higher level of fuel helps cool the pump AND keep the hose connecting it to the delivery tube from shrinking. And those are the two most common failure points.

Note: to all who find this tech useful, consider hitting the like button.😊

I've never run out - when gauge hits 1/2 I go to high alert, and at 1/4 I'm heading for the nearest station!

My fuel gauge would read above F when full for many years. Now when its full it reads a little below F mark. On E and I'm walking, tho I never go below 1/4 if I can help it. It always read F for a long time then quickly drop to 1/2 which was about right. When the odometer worked it was my best gas range gauge, except in low range low the watch as in gallons per hour. Rudimentary gauges at best. Like my direct read oil pressure gauge, I trust it.

All excellent sentiments….I have had the “experience” of running out of fuel… I have been the same way ever since….At 1/4 tank, I am heading to the nearest station.

That wasn’t always the case . I’m betting a bunch of us have been there… At age 21 (1974) ALL of the money I had was going to the brand new monthly FJ40 payment, rent and food. My future wife and I ran out of fuel on the Adirondack Northway on the way home to Vermont. NO ONE AROUND and temperatures hitting -20F with snow sweeping across the roadway. Exits are further apart, 10-15 miles and the amount of fuel we could get off the highway at .78 cents or so versus in town might have been a gallon or more . Since we were eating Kraft Macaroni and Cheese for .22 cents a box…money was at a premium. Those were the good ‘ol days. It sucked at times but we had a ton of fun.
