Took the kids out and about today and went to go see @Rainman. He was working on @74FJ40newbie front axle.

Installed 6* shims on my rear leaf packs, removed the add a leaf I installed a year or so ago.

Test drove it. No more grumbling from the driveline.

Actually had to winch out from that spot, my rig slid backwards a couple of feet when I backed in right there, slicker than deer guts on a doorknob.

Of course I was scouting water.

Restored parking break handle. Had a big crack in the plastic handle.

well stainless steel Milling in general is very difficult



so I decided on the Chrome ones ...


I received my initial prototype’s samples kit today for Chrome Ones and To my delight !

they look just like Well polished chrome OEM late model toyota alloy wheels chrome lug nuts

same sheen , and luster , and general solid feel in your hand

I test fit the thread pitch and diameter of the female threads and percent too


they are also a tru JIS 12mm hex tool size

this was a greater hurdle to get past , one might think

I was simply pleased enough and they passed The :

“Skunk - Works “ Lab’s rigorous. 1 , 2 , and 3's

Test for me ....and i grade hard too !

Put a Classic WA plate on the rear (life time registration woot woot!). The classic plates don't come with or require that a front plate be mounted, so I put on a decorative custom plate.

And, pulled the beast out of storage to move it towards running and driving.

What are those steering inserts? Do they change out to stronger/bigger tie rod ends? I've never seen them before.

They weld into 1.25x.250 wall DOM to accept FJ60TRE for a 60 conversion. I’m running 60 knuckles/steering arms. This is the quickest easiest way to build the linkage.

That's really nice! I've got the same setup, but use the machined tapered bushings in the 60-series ends to adapt to the 40 series steering linkage. I like this option because I suspect the 60 series bushings are "beefier" than the 40 series.

I think I’m using those bushings in our 72 build. The stock 60 setup uses both 21mm and 23mm threads. For this one, I’m using all 23s to get rid of the long relay rod end at the pitman. The relay end at the tie rod is an 80series with a bushing from 4X4Labs labs to adapt to the 60taper.

I finished the refurbishment of a '78 through '80 2F electronic distributor, including a new NipponDenso vacuum advancer (to replace the non-working vacuum retard/advance advancer). I also replaced the mechanical advance weights, complete with new OEM sleeves, and replaced the missing stop pin bushing. I installed it in my '76 FJ40, set the timing, and took it for a spin. Works great, with a lot of pep. I wanted to test it out and make sure it works as expected before posting it for sale here on MUD. Here are some photos of the internals during the refurbishment:

And here it is installed (the big white arrow on the oil filter is a rotor orientation reference point from a past distributor reinstall):

Spent 2 days trying to take my rear U Bolts off with less then stellar results. Got 1 of 4 off. New ones are in the mail and will be cutting the remaining ones off...

oh and I dropped a metal fuel tank hanger on my head.

Where did you get that plate? Got me one of the Wa collectors plates. Love not paying again!

Georg at Valley Hybrids has my 40 - massaging any unknown bugs out that are above my level.
A pandemic hits and I'm stuck at my house with 20+ things to do except work/drive my LC. Anyway, looking at your clean 40 I thought I'd raise a pint to you getting in a drive today!

Maybe a silly question but I have a pair of those brackets similar to yours there (with 15 sticker on it)... what are those as I’m new to the 40 world??
