There you go.
All this rear winch talk is wild.
But they're your dollar signs and your vehicle, if you want it, go for it.

Picture having to go down a drop like the one at the end of Steel Bender with no spotter and no other vehicle to strap to behind you.

It’s really not far fetched.
Example—Wheeling with a buddy and he rolls his rig and needs medical. You either drive all the long way back or get out the fastest way...or get him out quickly via the drop. -You need to do the drop. A rear winch could be a safeguard similar to the guys who back-strapped to another vehicle. As you might agree...we probably would have been wise to back strap on the right big drop SND the left drop!

Stuff like that could have happened during that crazy night y’all had last year in Moab.

But anyway... I’d welcome a rear winch in that scenario, especially since U often wheel alone.

Real time help needed.
Does anyone have access to the torque specs for the rear axle.
Gear carrier to axle housing nuts, hubs to axle nuts, driveshaft nut/bolt.

Thanks

Or your pack a spot device and medi-fligh

Get one of these, its cheaper. Stat flight that poor sob outta there and don't go down the spot that jacked your buddy and his rig up.

Ya. I have a garmin inreach.

OK. Forget the medical. :)

Try this on:
You’re alone in a rocky narrow and you are stuck...and you realize it only gets worse forward of you...so winching forward is not smart.

Voila!

OK I'm a cheap old bastard. Give me a chair, popcorn and a brew and I'll watch you and if you ask I'll hold your beer.

Installed new brake rotors and pads on the 200. Also did an oil change. Then gave her a bath! All ready for a 3000 mile road trip around the 4th.

No you’re not!
I saw those Kngs on your Tacoma, and no “cheap old bastards” buy Kings. :grinpimp:

Yeah, I would not mount a rear winch. I also wouldnt wheel alone. There is always someone local willing to go wheeling. Even if I was on my own I wouldnt mount a rear winch. My 40 came with a removable winch that I could also move to the back (Click my 40 link in my sig). I didnt like the vibration noise so I ran a bolt through to keep it firmly in place, I could move it if I wanted to.

Everyone has to do what is right for them. There really isnt a need for a front locker on a 200. The 100 there is due to a weak pinion, but with the ATRAC, Rear locker and stronger pinion there isnt a need. Still I had one, hevent ever needed, BUT maybe one day I will be in a situation where I will be glad I did.

You should add a rear winch Mark if that is something you want. That is what mods are all about

Ya, thanks Romer. Like you say, we are all different. It’s true that wheeling alone is not ideal (nice way of saying somewhat dumb/risky). But the fact is...I DO often wheel alone and surely will again. So it’s attractive to me.

I don’t actually see a clear path for me to add one...since my heavily armored rear bumper makes @Taco2Cruiser ’s exact solution maybe impossible...but I am definitely interested. I’m wondering if there might be a way to modify

I prefer to wheel/camp alone. I like the solitude and isolation. Plus, I like get blind drunk and shoot 9MM into the ground yelling Pantera lyrics (RIP Vinnie).

Ima get a drone and video your drunken 9mm dance and sell tickets here on mud...

I do sound like Phil when I'm loaded.

Heh...

But anyway... I agree. There is something to be said about wheeling alone. :)

Not saying it’s wise... But most of my life’s travels have been alone, including some extraordinarily unsafe scenarios.

But do we really want complete safety?
I’m pretty sure most of us don’t Seek complete safety, or we would be wheeling. Romer...might not wheel alone...but I’ve seen him super tippy on CRAZY stuff and he’s no shrinking violet! None of us want to roll, but we all have different thresholds of acceptable risk.

I think we all agree that “risky” is a super subjective term. Like Romer said in different words. -If it’s OK for YOU...then go for it. Just need to use extra care and maybe extra tools (rear winch perhaps? Hehe) so that higher thresholds of “acceptable risk” don’t turn into carelessness.

**I watched a guy free-solo climb El Capitan in Yosemite (free-solo means no partner...no ropes at all. Just you and the cliff...and El Cap is NUTS). For me? That would be Careless. Ridiculous. But for that guy? He was prepared... and had the tools he needed that would be inadequate for most of us.

Took off my two ARB front tow points and dremelled down the inside edges so they stop nearly cutting my soft shackles.

Looks rough in the photo, but I smoothed them out after the pic:

Perty!

The perty will be scraped to heck soon enough, but at least the hole edges are done pummeling my soft shackles.

I'm with you. I've almost always wheeled alone. Whenever I do get to go to a LCDC will be the 3rd time wheeling with other vehicles in 15 years. I don't find solo wheeling risky at all. Without going into a long, drawn out thesis statement. With enough training and experience, it becomes second nature. But that's where formalized training, and not "I've been doing this for years" makes the difference.

had big weekend in the driveway.

Mounted up a 30" curved light bar in the grill. had to notch the cooling fins to set it back a little to flow better with the lines of the truck.

there was some discussion earlier about painting the roof to reduce temperatures. I was looking into rinolining/ linex when that thread popped up. I spent $50 on a can of Bus-Kote to see if it would help. if it turns to crap, i'll just go back to original plan and linex the roof.
I've been leaving a thermometer in the car the past week to see just how hot it gets. outside temps have been 106- 110, sunny, low humidity. at lunchtime the interior was 124 degrees (+/-) a degree or two. at the end of the day, the temps were 134-137.
Painted the first coat Saturday morning. Ambient temp was 108, interior at lunch time 117, at mid afternoon 124. I still have to do the second coat. hopefully that will help even more.

I didn't get to the second cote on the roof, as I was behind schedule installing new gears.
due to budgetary constraints, I chose 4.30 gears. for the rear I found a 1999 100 series with a factory locker. picked up the entire axle for $700. Been selling the axle shafts and have the brakes up in classifieds. There was a slight modification to the housing needed to clear the locker actuator, but the Third member is a direct replacement.

IMG_20180623_143422_102.webp

Up front, I sourced a 2010 Tundra differential with 4.30 gears. $300 off ebay. There were some parts that had to carry over from the cruiser housing, and I installed new seals while I had it apart.

Currently in for $1100 for regearing and factory rear locker. I still have to wire a switch for the locker and the lights. The actuator interfered with the sway bar, so I'm running with no KDSS at the moment. Working on a solution to have locker and sway bar.

The truck is a lot smoother on acceleration. Doesn't feel like it is struggling to get moving. Oddly, the braking seemed smoother too.

While I had the rear end up on jackstands, I took the opportunity to swap in Icon rear springs. I added a 10 mm spacer. I cranked the front coilovers a little to keep the rake where I wanted it. Will post a pic of the new ride height later today. Wanted everything to settle a little before measuring heights. Should be 24 3/4" from center of the wheel to fender in the rear and 1/4" lower in the front.
