My ungrateful mistress rode away on a tow truck this morning, right in time for a road trip from Tampa to Lincoln, Maine. Ran like a dream all day yesterday. In the evening, I got the ever blissful Crank-No Start with fuel gushing down my driveway. Epicenter for the leak was near the left rear tire. Local indy shop pulled the tank today to diagnose it; I am looking at the fuel lines... praying the tank is whole. This vehicle has been everything but "Easy Toyota ownership".

Chunking away at some minor projects since buying the Cruiser in December. It’s been running 10-15* hot. Pulled the thermostat and, yep, it was upside down. Clocked it at 12 o’clock and been running nice and cool ever since.

Upside down? I didn't even know that was possible on a 2UZ. My 60 I know you could put it upside down and would look normal, good catch man.

Saw this when I was hitting some bolts on the LCAs with PB blaster, think I might have clamped the outer boot not enough or maybe some grease on the ring preventing good seal. Dealer wants $30 for one clamp.
Ordered a clamp/castle nuts/cotter pins for $40 shipped from Toyota parts deal so we’ll have to wait a bit before I get to address this.

Hopefully new LCAs going on this weekend at least after I do brakes/oil change on my sisters car.

@jaewastooshort That’s pretty cool - the tires would make it easy to lug things around. My ground clearance is 21” measuring from the bottom of the rack to the floor. I haven’t had any issues going up fire roads but also don’t hit any technical trails with it. To your point, it’ll probably scrape on everything.

I only use the cargo carrier on trips where we bring the dogs. The carrier comes off once we reach our destination. For this trip, we stayed in a cabin so easy enough to leave the carrier behind and go out and explore.

For camping, I tow a military trailer with 33” tires.

Love the versatility of this vehicle. Next is how to carry more crap on the roof in case I don’t want to bring the carrier. 😅

Heads up, flip that metal bracket for your ABS line so it sits higher or away from your CV to avoid serious problems.

Hope this helps.

wagon was for a beach trip, it was handy, but the only time we used it as such because of clearance issue.

re:trailer, nice. I really want to build a camping trailer capable of trails to mount my RTT on so we can set up camp and still go drive. camping junk takes up so much cargo space as it is that it seems like a good compromise traveling with three kids to be able to get them some more room while on the road.

unrelated bad news, pulling my coils to check plug tightness and such and so far all 3 coils are cracked. (ETA: 7 of 8 cracked)

so guess I'm ordering all new coils/plugs and going to start of my DT header swap since I'm waiting on coils anyway

Agreed. Takes a good amount of creativity to make everything fit for a road trip. On the DT headers, remove the driver side engine mount and raise the engine to get more clearance. You’ll have enough room on the passenger side.

Rockauto.com has a good price for Denso brand ignition coils. I have replaced 3 of the coils on my '99 after reading the codes from two separate CEL light incidents. I have on hand new Denso coils to replace the other 5 now, just need to do it.

Setting up the iSi bike carrier that I picked up from @ClassyJalopy (thanks for the deal!).

I ordered additional parts from iSi in Australia, including a license plate bracket with integrated lights that came with an Australian 7-pin connector. I removed the 7-pin connector and spliced the wires to a connector that plugs into the OEM harness plug. The tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals all work. It cannot be connected to a 4-pin flat or 7-way RV plug because the light system requires separate brake and turn signal circuits.

Going to need a WIDE LOAD banner for that 🤣

May need to get a Commercial Driver’s License after this. 2 adult bikes 29” tires and 2 kid bikes 16-20” tires. 😁

Yeah, my 3rd gen 4runner was the same way when I bought it. Running hot and the jiggle valve was at 6 o’clock. Flip it over and now all is good.

When did you get your headers? I had put in an order with XAT back in early November and never heard anything.
I just emailed them back, saying I’m most likely going to cancel this order.

Try getting this tool, crimp it again then clean it before you replace it.

I finally went and drove it instead of working on it all the time. Last minute, unplanned trip looking for sunshine and dodging storms. Ended up at St George, Bullhead City and Hoover Dam. I was slightly wary because of incomplete baselining (heater Ts anyone?), but it did fine. Added 1,668 miles for a total of 331,300.

Oh, also a new set of Michelins the day before we left.
