Did our first dry run this weekend down in GWNF - before our big 5 week trip out west this summer. Tested out the new RTT (along with everything else recently installed).
Been chasing a "chugging" sound upon startup and shut-down for the last 2 weeks on my 3FE. The only thing I could think of was valve issues. I opened her up and did the valve adjustment per the FSM and seems to have cured the issue. Odd thing is that I did this just a few months ago and it already moved out of spec? Why?
Anyway, a couple of pics of the head...she looks pretty clean for having 275K miles. I've not done anything but change the oil and normal PM to the motor. This is the third time I've done a valve adjustment on the truck. The first time I screwed up and didn't set the motor at TDC, the second time I thought I got it right but obviously something changed and this time I'm pretty sure all is correct. Anyway, I'm getting faster at it. It only took me about an hour this time!

I took it to my local mechanic on Wednesday to price replacing both u-joints on the rear drive-shaft. While there I decided to add replacing the valve cover gasket too. Parts were ordered and I brought it in Thursday morning for the "a few hours" job. Well... the head guy was gone until mid-afternoon, leaving the other guy working on everything by himself. One of the replacement u-joints was defective, so that job is on hold until the replacement replacement is delivered. Started working on the valve cover gasket job, and: the air intake hose is brittle and split (order a new one); PCV valve hose and gasket are brittle (order new ones); have to remove the throttle body to remove the valve cover (order throttle body gasket); plugs are old (order new ones); points and rotor are old (order new ones). The other guy is gone all day on Friday, so I hope to get her back on Monday. The good news is, with the valve cover off, the innards look pretty good to have over 209k on the clock.

I replaced the main shaft seal on my steering shaft. There's a couple good threads on here. Took me about 25 minutes and bye bye hot feets. The old one was toasted.

Just in time for the weekend...
Pulled the throttle body for a cleaning, along with the valve cover for a fresh coat of paint (I went with engine BLUE rather than red as I don't want her thinking she's red hot
). THE valve cover bolts around #5 and #6 were not even finger tight and coated in fresh oil. Slapped it all back together with new gaskets, spark plug seals, PCV valve, grommet, hoses, fresh oil and filter, and an engine bay degrease, and just passed California emissions easily to renew my registration. Phew! Off to get her dirty...

Just a quick tip. I did this repair last year and kept getting a rubbery, squeaky sound. I ended up spraying a little silicon lube on it and its all gone. It will probably help extend the life of the piece too. Cheers!
Installed general grabber at2 315/75/16, pulled out the garage and went for a drive, then the only section of exhaust that I didn't replace broke (y-pipe). She is back in the garage waiting on new parts.....
