Getting our basket-case '95 road worthy. This week, I decided to replace the brake pads, rotors, and brake lines (F&R). Suddenly, last night I found myself doing a Birf job too after I realized the "recent Birf job" the PO said had been done recently (read - NOT done).

I cleaned the rear sliding windows and their tracks. They slide freely now. The kids love it

Installed OEM second battery tray. Replaced gaskets on latches on sliding glass. Installed front mud flaps.

Since my truck is up on stands waiting for new gears I went ahead and pulled both seats and installed gamiviti caps. I ordered caps and gears but luckily all it took were the caps. PO had attempted to fix with a bolt and a pipe clamp... It didn't work.

I also pulled the ps reservoir and two of the three low pressure lines. I can't find the third (haven't looked that hard) these must have been original, the were very brittle and broke in half!

did an oil change and took a sample for Blackstone Labs, just wondering... Also checked the preload on the front bearings which turned out to be loose. Both front wheels had some play 6 months after a front axle rebuild and I was feeling it while driving. Glad I took the time to check it out! Lastly I tightened up the steering box screw for improved steering "feel" does feel tighter.

Oil change and installed MAF caster correction drop brackets. Luckily, the brackets seemed to have eliminated my slight "grrrr" vibration while coasting.

What tourque setting are you using for the preload? I went through loose preload for well over a year when I kept setting at FSM specs. Now I tourque to 15 FT> lbs and they stay tight. Some PPL on MUD with large tires have reported 25+ ft. lbs with no ill effects. I just put on 37's recently so I am curious if the new setting will hold. Time will tell.

I just tightened it until I felt the nut give some resistance and spun the wheels back and forth a few times and backed off a smidgen. The first wheel was still looses and I had to do it again but I didn't uses a torque wrench just by feel.

From experience by feel always feels tight but in actuality its way too loose. Get a torque wrench on those things, Set bearing with first nut at 48 ft. lbs , spin hub, back off first nut, torque to 10 FT. lbs, spin hub, install star washer and 2nd nut, torque outer nut to 48 ft. lbs. Make sure outer when torque outer nut that it doesn't spin inner nut. Usually you can jam up the hub to do the torque settings. screwdriver pushed into side of rotor works or something similiar.

This ^^

Just remember to take a mallet to the perimeter of the carrier with some authority once you think you're done. Then check it again. We forgot to do this, and a slight lip in the carrier gave a false positive that the preload was correct. 30 miles later the tire was wobbling. It's been fine ever since it was corrected, but it taught me a lesson about checking bearings on my 80.

Not everyone experiences a "lip" in their carrier when seating their bearings, but several have commented on this in the past. It's a good preventative measure if nothing else.

We have been changing a lot of them around here. The desert heat has made them rock hard, and then they tend to crack right where the end of the hard line is inside the hose. The high pressure lines seem to survive much better. John

Changed the gas tank straps :)
Just the straps aren't too bad unless they are really rusty. I got to help swap two tanks back and forth between a donor rig and a wheeler. The tank on the wheeler got to famous stress crack on it and was peeing fuel, only when the tank was full. Fortunately, both rigs were desert natives and there was no rust anywhere. But, there was tons of sand/dirt everywhere that just insisted on migrating to my eyes during the process!! John

Ran into a fellow mudder on my way to the range. Howdy mikesta!

Some general PM as my first Moab trip is around the corner.

Helped Punkrockpoppa fix those small annoyances that make a man hate his vehicle. Newer radio with iPod hookup, all vents working, new bulbs in the HVAC control, etc.

Installed a yellow box speedo correction, washer bottle relocation kit, second battery box and Slee extended frame to axle brake lines.
