What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend?

Well I got to drive my 97 around all week. First fill up got me 12.7 mpg, same as the 91. This rig has had so much maintenance done that I have had virtually no baseline maintenance to take care. The only things I found wrong over the week of driving is the middle and rear dome lights do not work and the rig needed a good deep cleaning. I decided to try and swap out the manual seats from my 91, tear the interior out for cleaning, and install my stereo from my totaled 91 this weekend.

Finally got my wife and daughter to go with me into the high country to see the neighborhood... Wildflowers, waterfalls, blue skies and mountains!

Of course I ran into a couple of hiccups, the seat bolts and holes were all kinds of buggered up and some of the brackets in the rear of the truck must have had something spilled on them because they were covered in corrosion. The old tap and die and some wire wheel action fixed things right up.

I did this same thing on my 91 and it worked great. I use liquid nails or similar construction adhesive to glue a block of wood to the rear quarter panel. Tomorrow I will attach an amp to the wood to power my rear sub. I will remove the storage box from the interior trim piece and I can then remove the door and access the amp to make adjustments.

I have an extra set of door panels so tomorrow I hope I can take the best parts of both sets and get a complete set of door panels in great shape. That and I am hoping to remove some old wiring, install my stereo stuff, and get it all put back together.

Cut off the lame Mud Flaps! Finally finished base lining, Ironman Snorkel, ARB Diff Breathers, Smittybilt Winch with custom SS bracket for the winch control, Black hood wrap, Alpine deck and all new speakers, lots of Wit's End goodies (Thanks Joey) added Delta Storage brackets for a storage Tray in the back (Now i have a grab handle for the Dirver's side . waiting for my GOBI Ladder (Ordered in January) should be here in the next couple weeks . Hopefully the Uptop Overland rack ships Monday. Now if I could only stop working so much I can wheel the Beast. Only been able to use it for work to drive to job sites. Not that I am complaining, as the money funds my Cruiser Addiction but 3-days off in the last 42 days is getting old. Got more stuff to do but no time to do it. Just got the Lutz speedo adjustment, but too many Honey-dos to crawl under and install. oh and the Metal Tech sliders are on top of my paddle boards gathering dust, as I have no time to weld them up and still need to powder coat them.

Acquired a second 80 a couple weeks ago. a 96. This made me realize my first 80 throttle feels super rough and crappy. I replace the throttle cable on my 93 , it feels way smoother now. I also replaced the radiator, hoses and had the 96 detailed and ceramic coated. I love my built 93, but the this 96 is clean, low miles and I can throw a wits end turbo on it!?( no lockers like my 93) Wish I could keep both, but I’ll need to sell one a month or 2

Started doing leather and seat cushions ... only to find all the outboard cushion supports on the drivers side we’re broken at the welds

That did cross my mind..... maybe? I just painted the 93 in Feb though and it’s so dialed in.... except it’s not super charged! Lol! I wonder what I could get for the 93 non locked.... non armored.

Made some more progress today. I got all the carpets cleaned and drying for the night. I got my rear amp and sub installed. I removed a very large amount of wiring and a 2008 double din from the PO. I got 80% of the wiring done for my stereo. And I also arced the battery removing the positive terminal.

Toyota really did a piss poor job engineering the battery hold down on these rigs. The hold down hooks into a hole on the body so if you accidentally touch your tool from the nut on the positive lead to the hold down than your likely to start a fire. I would highly recommend the Land Cruiser Phil battery hold down as an upgrade. I wish I wasn't in a hurry and had the forethought to think ahead and order this product from him a week ago.

Because I was not smart enough to plan accordingly and I am rushing to get this rig back on the road, along with the fact that I had everything on hand, I just copied Land Cruiser Phil's product. Sorry Phil, I have been meaning to purchase this from you, but something always comes up. I certainly wish I would have ordered it a week ago instead of building it myself.....

Actually, if you had the CORRECT battery in there, the terminal wouldn't be anywhere close to the battery hold down.

According to interstate battery this is the correct battery, at least it was for the 91. But I am not about to buy a new battery when the one I bought for the 91 was only 2 months old. What battery would you recommend? And please don't say optima.....

Regardless of battery type, the oem hold down sucks. The hooks slowly tear through the battery tray and get loose. Eventually you run out of useable threads and run the risk of the battery bouncing into the hood and causing a fire. Not to mention the one hook and nut are so close to the radiator that it becomes next to impossible to get a socket or ratcheting wrench on the hook/rod and it ends up taking 10 minutes to turn the nut off with an open end wrench....

Should be a group 24F or 27F. He has a group 78 in there.

The 24F has the posts towards the rear of the battery box with the positive post towards the center (right) of the truck.

This places the positive post as far away from the fender, the factory battery hold-down, and any other contact point OTHER than the negative post on the battery.

The one shown in his pics has the posts in the center or offset to the FRONT of the truck AND it has side-posts that directly interfere with the battery mount.

You should pull the battery box out of the 91 and do duals, but I think you've already mentioned that.

No need lol, the 97 already has two battery boxes. The other box is currently doing spare fluids storage duty...
